Modern projectors capable of reproducing high-quality video, and even in high resolution and with a large margin of brightness, are usually quite expensive. To identify models of acceptable quality at an affordable price on the market, you need to conduct a captious analysis. The editors of Expertology magazine have done this work for you and offer an overview of the best budget projectors in the context of several price subcategories.

The most affordable projectors

In the first selection, we will consider those models that at the end of August 2022 can be bought for very little money. These devices are not suitable for a home theater device, but are quite acceptable for a variety of entertainment for children and not too demanding leisure for adults.

DIGMA DiMagic Kids 320×240, 500:1, 30 lm, LCD, 0.42 kg

Rating: 4.7

DIGMA DiMagic Kids 320x240, 500:1, 30 lm, LCD, 0.42 kg

And let’s start with the model, the intended purpose of which is already in the name. DiMagic Kids is well suited for showing cartoons to children on a small screen. Formally, you can watch anything on this projector, but its technical parameters at an ultra-affordable price impose serious restrictions.

The range of diagonal projection sizes is from 0.51 m to 2.03 m. But you need to understand that with a luminous flux of 30 lm at the maximum projection size, the image will be too dim even in a completely darkened room. Plus, the low resolution – 320×240 and 4:3 projection ratios are not designed to demonstrate video in a cinematic format. The multimedia capabilities of the projector are limited by a decent but single speaker.

But for showing simple cartoons with two-dimensional graphics on a small screen, these parameters are enough as a simple entertainment.

To connect content sources, the projector is equipped with USB Type-A and HDMI interfaces. There is a slot for microSD. The advantage of this model can be considered miniature dimensions – 105x110x103 mm and weight less than half a kilogram.

On many trading floors, this model is still positioned as “for the office.” This is not a mistake, for simple operational presentations with only an informative, and not an image purpose, the projector may also be suitable.

Advantages

  • cute design;

  • simple control;

  • built-in good speaker;

  • slot for memory cards;

  • super affordable price.

Flaws

  • extremely limited scope.

Thundeal TD90 Multiscreen Version (WiFi) 1280×720, 2000:1, 2800 lm, LCD, 1.02 kg

Rating: 4.8

Thundeal TD90 Multiscreen Version (WiFi) 1280x720, 2000:1, 2800 lm, LCD, 1.02 kg

Now consider the “adult” model, which is a cut above the previous one, but at the same time, of course, at least twice as expensive.

Here we already see an acceptable resolution even for watching feature films – 1280×720. This, of course, is not FullHD, but even laptops are still produced with this resolution, so it’s quite suitable for not too sophisticated cinematic leisure.

Equally important here is the light output. The value of 2800 lm is indicated, and here we can immediately say that we are talking about the so-called “Chinese lumens”. Unlike the ANSI standard, this method involves measuring the brightness in the center of the screen, where the light output is strongest.

However, this model is quite capable of providing normal picture brightness in a completely darkened room, and the contrast ratio will approach 2000:1. The range of projection distances is from 1 to 4 meters. The projection aspect ratio is 16:9.

An important feature of the projector is the functionality, and it is surprisingly wide for such a price. Here we see an extended set of interfaces. In addition to USB Type-A and HDMI input, there is also an RCA audio input, a standard 3.5 mm mini-jack, and plus two more audio inputs – coaxial and optical. Why such a concentration of audio interfaces is not clear, but users like it. There is even a Wi-Fi module, but it does not work flawlessly.

Advantages

  • good brightness and contrast;

  • many interfaces;

  • WiFi;

  • cute design;

  • portable.

Flaws

  • over Wi-Fi, the sound often lags behind the video.

Everycom M8 1280×720, 2000:1, 4000 lm, LCD, 1.5 kg

Rating: 4.9

Everycom M8 1280x720, 2000:1, 4000 lm, LCD, 1.5 kg

An even more advanced model with similar parameters, but with some useful add-ons at a comparable price.

The key characteristics here are generally the same – resolution 1280×720, luminous flux – 4000 lm (the same “Chinese” lumens). Contrast – 2000:1, but only in a completely darkened room and does not always “hold out”.

The projection distances of this model are already different, suitable for a larger room – from 1.5 to 3.8 meters. Accordingly, the size of the projection in the diagonal is from 1.27 to 3.05 m. What is remarkable and important is that this model already has a function for correcting keystone distortions vertically.

This projector has even more interfaces than the previous one: as many as two USB Type-A ports, two HDMIs, a composite video input, an RCA audio interface, and even a VGA input.

Finally, the most noticeable in the functionality is that there is software running under the Android OS, and with its help you can even duplicate the content being played on a smartphone.

Advantages

  • acceptable luminous flux power for this price;

  • good image quality in general;

  • keystone correction;

  • many interfaces;

  • cute design;

  • Android operating system;

  • duplication of the “picture” on a wearable gadget.

Flaws

  • noisy at work.

Cactus CS-PRE.05B. WXGA-W black

Rating: 5.0

Cactus CS-PRE.05B.  WXGA-W black

And the selection will be completed by another compact projector with comparable characteristics as the previous one, but with some differences.

In terms of key parameters, almost everything is the same here. The resolution is 1280×720, the lamp power is 40 W, the declared contrast ratio is less – 1500: 1, but it is more realistic. The same goes for the luminous flux – 1800 lm is a more realistic figure than the 4000 lm of the previous model, which means only the peak value.

Projection distances are the same – from 1.5 to 3.2 meters. Here, too, there is a function of manual vertical keystone correction. Plus added the ability to manually shift the lens.

There are fewer interfaces in this model, but this is not a drawback, since everything you need is there, and the rest is more redundant than useful. So, there is one USB Type-A port, two HDMI inputs, one VGA video input, one component and 3.5 audio mini-jack.

Often, marketplaces indicate the presence of Wi-Fi in this projector, but this is an option. And if wireless communication is critical, this point needs to be clarified.

Unlike the previous model, this projector is not as noisy in operation.

Advantages

  • acceptable brightness and contrast for such a price;

  • good image quality;

  • vertical keystone correction;

  • manual lens shift;

  • Wi-Fi (option);

  • relatively quiet operation.

Flaws

  • user complaints about the lack of the promised Wi-Fi.

Budget projectors with FullHD resolution

Now let’s move on to a review of the selection of projectors that are already capable of viewing content in FullHD quality, which means that, under certain conditions, they are suitable for a home theater device.

TouYinGer L7 1920×1080 (Full HD), 2000:1, 4500 lm, LCD, 1.4 kg

Rating: 4.8

TouYinGer L7 1920x1080 (Full HD), 2000:1, 4500 lm, LCD, 1.4 kg

The first most inexpensive and acceptable option in terms of characteristics in this price subcategory. In terms of light output and contrast, the projector has almost all the same characteristics as the above two models: 4500 lumens of peak light output, contrast ratio up to 2000:1 at full blackout.

The resolution is clear – FullHD 1920 × 1080, but it is worth clarifying that the projector supports all the “younger” standards – 720p, 576p and 480p. In addition, there is support for interlaced scanning modes – from 1080i downstream to 480i.

Extended range of projection distances – from a minimum of 1.5 m to a maximum of 4.2 m. Accordingly, the dimensions of the projections in the diagonal – from 1.27 m to 5.08 m. There is a function of manual correction of trapezoid distortions vertically.

The set of interfaces is minimally sufficient: two USB Type-A ports, HDMI input, composite input, RCA audio. There is support for the Mobile High-Definition Link (MHL) standard, which combines the capabilities of HDMI and MicroUSB.

This model has a L7W modification with an important addition – the presence of the Android OS.

Advantages

  • FullHD resolution 1920 × 1080 (hereinafter);

  • vertical keystone correction (manually);

  • Android on L7W modification;

  • MHL support.

Flaws

  • user complaints about noticeable blurring in the corners.

ThundeaL TD97 (Multi-Screen version)

Rating: 4.9

ThundeaL TD97 (Multi-Screen version)

This is a more advanced version of the cheap projector from the previous collection. Just one character in the model name, and the difference in performance is dramatic.

In addition to the FullHD screen resolution, this model has noticeable improvements in terms of brightness and contrast. The official documents indicate the “marketing” figures of 7800 lumens of brightness and 15000:1 contrast, which should be considered critically. But in fact, the quality of the “picture” according to these indicators is really much better here than that of the model described above.

A noticeable increase in brightness goes well with an extended range of projection distances – from 1.6 to 6.5 meters. The size of the projection in the diagonal, respectively – from 49 to 300 inches. There is even a choice of aspect ratios between 4:3 and 16:9.

Separately, it is worth mentioning the correction of trapezoidal distortion. Here it is already multifactorial – 6D Keystone. There is a standard manual vertical correction option, but there is also a digital correction in both directions, four-point correction is supported. All this in the best way affects the final image quality.

Advantages

  • power 150W;

  • good brightness and contrast;

  • extended range of projection distances;

  • Wi-Fi and Bluetooth;

  • 3D support

  • Android/iOS with Airplay/Miracast support;

  • effective keystone correction, digital and manual.

Flaws

  • insignificant against the background of benefits and prices.

Byintek MOON K25 Smart

Rating: 5.0

Byintek MOON K25 Smart

The most expensive projector in this price subcategory of the fairly well-known brand Byintek will complete the selection.

This is a fundamentally different device in terms of technology. Here we already see a full-fledged Mali-T400 GPU with a frequency of 550 MHz, RAM and internal memory of 1 and 8GB, respectively. The software runs on Android 9.0 operating system. Advanced Interfaces – 2.4/5G 5G dual-band Wi-Fi, Bluetooth V4.0, full set of wired interfaces. Tellingly, the HDMI interface is also a new generation – 2.0.

Regarding the image characteristics, here we see at least an honest indication of the luminous flux parameters – 600 ANSI Lumens, although many sites indicate the same “Chinese lumens” with unimaginable values of 6000 units. But at least the same power – 140 watts – indicates a high margin of brightness.

With a combination of fast wireless connectivity, performance and quality software, the projector supports efficient wireless content mirroring on a paired smartphone.

Advantages

  • luminous flux power;

  • a set of interfaces;

  • multifunctionality;

  • effective distortion correction;

  • dual-band Wi-Fi and Bluetooth;

  • support Multi screen, Airplay, Miracast.

Flaws

  • there are complaints about the noisy operation.

Budget projectors from top brands

The final selection will be the most interesting. Here are projectors from the world’s top brands, which are known for producing high-quality monitors and other visualization equipment. The cost of these projectors is already quite tangible. But against the backdrop of most of the modern projector market, they are still many times cheaper than the mainstream.

Xiaomi Mi Smart Compact Projector white

Rating: 4.8

Xiaomi Mi Smart Compact Projector white

The brand does not need to be introduced, and for this model, you just need to clarify that we are talking about the first generation of Mi Smart Compact Projector. The second generation is significantly more expensive.

Here we have an honest 500 lm of luminous flux according to the ANSI standard, FullHD resolution 1920 × 1080, and in general we can say that in terms of image quality the projector is not much different from the above-described ThundeaL TD97 and Byintek MOON K25. Yes, it is, but its advantages are different.

This model has a well-developed multimedia component. And it’s not so much about a good quality pair of stereo speakers, although this is also a pleasant moment. We are talking about a complete set of software based on Android TV 9.0. That is, the projector is essentially at the same time a set-top box that does not require a TV, but a flat wall is enough to play it.

Under this functionality, the projector is equipped with normally working Wi-Fi and Bluetooth modules, a remote control, 16GB of permanent internal memory. True, the lack of a slot for memory cards upsets.

Advantages

  • quality of materials and assembly;

  • nice and convenient form factor;

  • acceptable margin of brightness;

  • image quality;

  • good stereo sound;

  • Android TV 9.0;

  • remote control.

Flaws

  • no memory card slot.

Viewsonic PA503X 1024×768, 22000:1, 3800 lm, DLP, 2.2 kg

Rating: 4.9

Viewsonic PA503X 1024x768, 22000:1, 3800 lm, DLP, 2.2 kg

An even more sonorous trademark, which is already even devoid of prejudice associated with the conditional “cheapness” of Xiaomi. Viewsonic monitors are appreciated all over the world, and in terms of projectors, the manufacturer does not disappoint either.

Here it is immediately worth noting the drawback – the resolution is 1024×768. But you need to understand that here we are talking about a different class of devices, and the emphasis in this case is not on resolution, but on a much wider use of the projector. This is achieved by increasing the characteristics of the power of the luminous flux and a fundamentally different image reproduction technology.

The 190 W lamp provides a light output that gives a sufficiently bright image even in a not completely darkened room. This also gives a much more expressive contrast and richer colors.

The most important difference of this model from all the previous ones is that DLP technology is used here. Without going into technical details, let’s say that this is an advanced technology in projection technology, which by definition provides a brighter, richer and more contrasting picture.

Advantages

  • reputable brand;

  • DLP technology;

  • brightness, contrast, saturation;

  • power and luminous flux;

  • a wide range of interfaces;

  • sleep timer.

Flaws

  • permission.

Epson EH-TW740 1920×1080 (Full HD), 16000:1, 3300 lm, LCD, 2.7 kg

Rating: 5.0

Epson EH-TW740 1920x1080 (Full HD), 16000:1, 3300 lm, LCD, 2.7 kg

The review will be completed with an example of a projector from the industry leader, the legendary Epson brand. And this is the most expensive model, which can hardly be qualified as a budget one, because it is at the level of a good laptop. But in the niche of projectors there is a special pricing, and this model is still quite cheap.

Here again we see LCD technology, but in this case it is not a drawback. This projector uses a powerful 210W UHE lamp, so the image brightness is in order. Technological add-ons allow you to achieve excellent contrast.

As many as three LCD matrices / DMD panels take part in the formation of the image. The video sequence is reproduced with an outstanding frequency for this price category of projectors – 85Hz.

To connect devices, USB Type-A interfaces and an HDMI video input are displayed. The projector is simple and easy to use, equipped with a remote control.

Advantages

  • reputable brand;

  • Full HD 1920×1080;

  • image quality in all respects;

  • frequency 85Hz;

  • effective distortion correction;

  • remote.

Flaws

  • price.
