Refers to project 949A according to the domestic classification “Antey”, is a nuclear submarine, which is equipped with 3M45 model cruise missiles. They were developed specifically to deal with enemy aircraft carriers. The design of the submarine began back in 1969. This was a new stage in the development of the submarine fleet, since at that time no country in the world had a similar vessel capable of effectively coping with aircraft carriers. As conceived by the engineers, the submarine was supposed to be an excellent replacement for projects 659 and 675, and in terms of technical capabilities, surpass them in all key indicators. This boat is capable of launching missiles, being both on the surface and underwater, and moves not too noisily. Missiles intended for the “aircraft carrier killer” were developed separately. The displacement is decent – 10,000 tons on the surface and 14,000 underwater. Overall dimensions also turned out to be larger than those of the boats belonging to the previous generation: the vessel is 143 m long, 18.3 m wide, and has a draft of 11 m.
The main power plant is two nuclear reactors with a water cooling system. They fully supply energy to two steam turbines that transmit torque to two propeller shafts. In the surface position, the boat moves at a speed of 20 knots, in the underwater position it is much faster – it can develop up to 35 knots. The main ammunition load is 24 winged 543 mm torpedoes. Instead, they often install anti-ship or anti-submarine torpedoes equipped with a high-explosive fragmentation submunition. The boat is capable of carrying 4 anti-ship torpedoes with a nuclear warhead, the yield of which is 15 kilotons. Electronics is represented by an advanced radar station, which allows you to accurately determine the location of the target. The ship is operated by a crew of 130 people. This is a two-hull submarine, and the distance between the light and strong hull is as much as 3.5 m, which increases buoyancy by 30% and allows you to reliably protect the main elements from underwater explosions. Accordingly, the design of the American engineers turned out to be much larger: the boat is 170.7 m long, 12.8 m wide, and the draft is 10.8 m. The crew size can vary from 133 to 154 people, depending on the type and complexity of the task. . The first submarine of this class was put into production back in 1976, and entered service six years later. The missile carrier is characterized by a rather long body, which in its shape resembles a drop. In the front part there is a missile compartment, the reactor compartment is located closer to the stern, in close proximity to the propellers, in the center area there is an engine room and a captain’s cabin with horizontal wing-shaped rudders. The stern stabilizer is made in the shape of a cross. There is only one propeller here. The maximum speed of this monster of engineering can reach 25 knots in a submerged position.
This speed is developed largely due to the nuclear reactor, whose capacity is 44.2 thousand kW, there is a steam generator and a propulsion plant operating on the principle of a turbine. The boat can stay submerged for 70 days without interruption, and the reactor needs to be recharged every 9 years. The ship’s hull is characterized by increased strength, so the ship is capable of diving to a depth of up to 500 m, and can withstand even close explosions. At the central post, directly under the captain’s cabin, there are all the key missile launch control systems. The main weapons here are three-stage Trident rockets that run on solid fuel. They are equipped with a warhead, which is divided during the flight into 8 warheads, each of which is equipped with its own guidance system, which is activated at the end of the flight. Today it is one of the best non-nuclear submarines in the world. Produced in Japanese shipyards. Initially, Japanese military engineers were not very good at developing underwater submarines. Some boats that make up the fleet were manufactured in the USA, others were made by the Japanese themselves, but according to designs acquired from Italian or French developers. When creating the project of this boat, it was Italian developments that were largely improved that were used. This is one of the latest world developments, and in no way inferior to foreign counterparts in terms of its characteristics. To date, the Japanese fleet already includes 8 submarines of this type. Japanese specialists were able to reach a qualitatively new level of metal development, thanks to which it was possible to achieve a significant reduction in engine noise. The motors are air independent. They operate on the basis of Stirling engines, but in the future it is planned to upgrade them, equipping them with high-capacity lithium-ion batteries.
By its design, the boat is somewhat smaller than foreign analogues: its length is 84 m with a width of 9.1 m, it gives a draft of 8.4 m. The displacement is negligible – 2947 tons on the surface and 4100 tons underwater. The maximum speed under water can reach 20 knots, above water – up to 12 knots, depending on weather conditions. It carries six Harpoon-class torpedoes as weapons. In addition, there is an original system for shooting enemy countermeasures. Another Soviet-made submarine, whose capabilities foreign engineering still cannot surpass, for this reason it is still in service with the Russian army. Submarines of this type belong to the third generation of boats equipped with a nuclear reactor. During the development of the design project, special attention was paid to significantly reduce the noise from movement both on the surface and in the submerged position. This would make the boat quieter. The main difference from the previous project “Barracuda” was the choice of material in the production of the hull. It was decided to abandon titanium, mainly for economic reasons, and there was also a shortage of metal in the country, there were difficulties with connecting the hull elements. They turned to steel – this helped not only significantly speed up the production of boats, but also make it less expensive, and this did not affect their reliability in the least.
For the production of screws, special high-precision machines were purchased from the Japanese company Toshiba. The propellers made on them differed in almost silent operation. The submarine is equipped with a double steel hull, metal with a yield strength of 100 kgf/sq.mm is used for this. The internal space is divided into several compartments – the central post, living quarters, duty posts, bow armament, power plant, engine room. Each zone is equipped with its own cushioning, which has a positive effect on the acoustic background. The engine power is 190 MW, which is provided by a nuclear reactor operating on slow neutrons. Under water, the boat develops a speed of 33 knots. It was developed almost at the same time as the Soviet project “Pike-B”. The first boat of this class was put into service in 1976, the last one became part of the US Navy twenty years later. Submarines belong to the strike class, they are capable of fighting enemy submarines, deploying special forces, mining sections of the seas, and performing search and rescue operations. As the main armament, Tomahawk-type missile systems are used, which have an effective range of 2500 km. The boat can also be equipped with the Harpoon anti-ship missile equipped with a homing head, a target engagement range of up to 130 km and a warhead weight of 225 kg. The ship has a unique set of acoustic-type search detection systems, and it can search for targets not only in the aquatic environment, but also on land, detect icebergs in a timely manner, and so on.
The power of the main engine is 26 MW, it is coupled to pressurized water reactors – such a design solution provides a maximum underwater speed of 30 knots, at peak loads for a short time the boat can accelerate to 35 knots. The maximum diving depth is 450 m. The crew consists of 14 officer units and 127 junior ranks. Above the surface of the water, the boat accelerates to 17 knots, there is also an auxiliary engine with a power of 242 kW. Another Soviet project of the late 70s of the last century, belongs to the multi-purpose generation of submarines, in which special attention was paid to increasing their search capabilities. Their main purpose was to timely detect enemy submarines, track them down and then destroy them, if the appropriate order was received. Thanks to the high-strength titanium alloy, it was possible to significantly increase the immersion depth and reduce the vessel’s magnetic field, and in terms of the latter point, submarines of this type are still world leaders today. The design is lightweight, two-hull. On the bow you can find the tip, made in the form of an ellipse, on the stern – spindle-shaped. In total, under the main body there are six interconnected compartments, and they are waterproof. The compartment where water enters is isolated if necessary. The crew rescue system has also been thought out – there is a pop-up capsule designed immediately for the entire crew of the boat.
The main power plant here is a water-cooled reactor, whose power is 43,000 horsepower, there is also a turbo-gear reactor, the latter being equipped with four steam generators. The weapon system allows you to fire regardless of the depth at which the submarine is currently located. The ammunition includes 40 torpedoes and missiles, even nuclear warheads are allowed.

Unlike the submarines discussed above, this project is characterized by the so-called one and a half hull design. Only the front and aft fairings act as a light hull, the captain’s and conning towers and superstructure received additional protection. From the inside, the boat is divided into several compartments; during development, a certain number of changes were made to the location of the weapons compared to the previous generation models. The torpedoes here are not in the bow of the boat, like most, but on the sides, in the middle part – a similar solution is rather typical of surface ships. The case is made of weakly magnetic steel, which is also covered with a layer of special rubber, which reduces noise and reduces the reflection of acoustic waves of the locators. In the bow there is a high-activity hydroacoustic complex with a number of additional antennas that occupy almost the entire bow surface of the boat, leaving no room for torpedo hatches.
The nuclear reactor available here is capable of operating without recharging for 30 years – about the same time the boat itself will last. The primary coolant is located directly in the reactor itself, which prevents exposure of the crew and reduces the likelihood of an emergency situation.

A Trafalgar-class submarine was used as a prototype, but the new submarine should almost double the ammunition capacity. The result was a single-hull single-shaft design with a pump-type engine, which practically does not make noise during operation. Outside, the boat is covered with a special anti-acoustic coating, which includes 39,000 special plates that absorb the sonar signal. Compared to previous versions, it is more suitable for operation in coastal waters and even in shallow water. This solution allows you to hit targets very far on land.
As a power plant, a water-cooled nuclear reactor is used, two steam turbines, through a gearbox, delivering torque to one shaft. The reactor operates for 25 years without recharging. During the service life of the submarine can perform as many as 40 round-the-world voyages. In order to increase the autonomy period, a system for generating oxygen from sea water is installed here. In addition to a set of standard weapons, this submarine has original equipment – uninhabited underwater vehicles, an airlock for divers with lightweight equipment, a deck mount that allows you to install a container or a miniature submarine. The development of the project started in the late 1980s, but the first model left the shipyard only in 2004. The boat turned out to be quite noisy, to combat this defect, the latest coatings were used to dampen acoustic vibrations, a system of insulated decks was installed from the inside, and the power plant was developed using the latest technologies. In addition, to reduce noise, the propeller was placed in a fenestron or annular fairing, which is approximately equal in depth to the diameter of the propeller itself.
This is the first boat in the world without a traditional periscope. Instead, a special telescopic mast is used here, which does not penetrate into the hull of the boat itself. It houses a television camera that transmits a signal to the display at the command post via fiber optic cable. The body also has communication and electronic intelligence antennas, a sensor for monitoring in infrared mode. The infrared laser is used as a rangefinder. 1 Seawolf Submarine
Initially, the development of this project was carried out as a response to the creation by Soviet military engineers of the Shchuka-B class submarine. This is a revolutionary example of American design and the use of the latest technology in the construction of submarines. The submarine has been under development for 10 years. The first model was laid down in the autumn of 1989, it was launched in the summer of 1995. This is one of the very first designs that was developed using computer technology. Initially, it was planned to release a series of 30 submarines, but after the collapse of the socialist state, the number was reduced to 12, even fewer were produced – only three ships. To date, this model is the most modern in terms of a number of its characteristics, moreover, such a boat is more expensive than any similar product in the world.
During the development of the project, special attention was taken into account to significantly reduce the noise of the boat while moving at low speed. For this, the original water-jet type engine was used, which was previously used on British submarines of the Trafalgar series. Here, 8 torpedo tubes were installed at once, and the number of charges was increased to 50 units, moreover, missiles and torpedoes are capable of hitting underwater, surface and ground targets at a considerable distance, it is possible to launch nuclear warheads, multiple rocket launchers simultaneously from all mines.
