Finally, we got a rather original device – a karaoke microphone with a built-in battery and a SVEN MK-960 speaker. Such products have been on the market for quite a long time and continue to arouse genuine interest among most users.
The karaoke microphone has slightly increased dimensions due to the built-in speaker and the presence of a battery, which allow you to use the gadget even in the absence of power supply and additional acoustic systems.
That is, you can just get it out of your backpack, turn it on and sing your favorite song while in the country, in the forest or at a party! Of course, it may seem that this is all a joke, but in fact it is quite real. Let’s take a closer look at this device, its capabilities and technical parameters.
Key quality characteristics
As with most sound-reproducing devices, one of the main qualities here is output power – for a microphone it is 6 watts. This power provides an acceptable loudness radius in free space of the order of 10-15 meters. In a room with an area of u200bu200bno more than 25-30 square meters. m, both the music and the voice of the singing person will be clearly audible. The frequency range is from 100 Hz to 20 kHz. If the performer does not have an operatic voice like a mezzo-soprano, then it will do just fine. The speaker diameter is 40 mm.
If desired, you can connect the device to a sound source via Bluetooth, there is also a microSD / TF slot. The microphone uses a lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 1200 mAh and a voltage of 5 V as a power source. The overall dimensions of the device are 77x77x235 mm, its weight is 400 grams. The product is executed in the metal case painted in black color.
Packaging, contents and appearance
The products are placed in a box made of fairly thick cardboard, which is decorated in the style of SVEN, symbolizing the blue and white Finnish flag. On the packaging there is a photograph of the microphone itself, it also briefly describes its main performance and other useful information.
There is also a USB-microUSB cable, which is 40 cm long. This cable is used to charge the battery. From the inside, all elements are securely fixed using a plastic lodgement with special stiffeners.
The product looks somewhat massive due to the presence of a washer-shaped cylinder on the handle. It is here that the main controls are located, including the control panel itself, the speaker, and the player. The handle is metal, does not slip in the hands. The weight is balanced, which allows you to hold the microphone for a long time. It is worth noting that the handle is removable, under it there is a battery compartment, the format of which is 18650.
If necessary, you can purchase additional batteries, with their help you can extend the battery life of the gadget. It is worth noting that on sale there are batteries of a similar format, but with a larger capacity. The top and bottom side of the washer has a glossy finish.
Most of the side surface is covered with a stainless steel mesh, which is painted black – it should be directed towards the listener and, accordingly, the viewer. As a result, the device control panel will be in front of the singing person. The base of the panel is glossy. Here is a button that turns on the device, several keys designed to control the player. In addition to them, there are two volume buttons and two faders with a relatively short stroke. With their help, the reverb or echo effect is adjusted, as well as the direct volume of the microphone.
The receiving part of the microphone is covered with a metal mesh, from the inside it separates the speaker itself with a windproof layer made of foam rubber. In general, this element of the device is practically no different from a classic dynamic microphone. On the bottom side of the device there are two connectors – for a memory card and microUSB for charging.
Sven MK-960 – the principle of operation and sound quality
The SVEN MK-960 microphone practically does not differ from ultraportable speakers in terms of playback quality. It is not necessary to expect any records from a speaker with a diameter of 40 mm. However, at medium volume, the sound turns out to be quite normal, the frequency range is balanced: both upper and middle frequencies are present, the bass line is also a little audible.
If the microphone is connected to a device with a built-in equalizer, then you can play with the settings a little: they allow you to slightly remove the high frequencies, make the bass deeper – with this, the middle part of the range becomes more pronounced and saturated. In order to transmit a signal from the source, the quite expected SBC codec is used. Sound output is still carried out from a single speaker. The sensitivity here is average.
Operation of the Sven MK-960 microphone
Portability is a key feature of the product. In the case of wireless use, the microphone is able to work for four hours at medium volume. Here we did not manage to sing to it during this time – it was done together with a slight break, so it lasted almost 8 hours. If one gadget will be used for a large company, then even these 4 hours will be enough. Moreover, if necessary, you can purchase similar batteries or batteries with a higher capacity.
The device has its own built-in player, with which you can play the .mp3 format from a microSD flash card. The device cannot work with other formats.
It is much easier to work with the device by connecting it via Bluetooth with a tablet, smartphone, laptop, and so on. There is another original moment that we discovered during direct testing of the microphone – if no memory card is inserted into it, then the wireless mode is turned on automatically. When the card is installed, you can switch between it and an external source by briefly pressing the central key.
There is no reverse signal transmission to the device transmitting sound at the microphone, so it will not be possible to work with it through common and popular karaoke applications. Nevertheless, the manufacturers in the instructions say the same thing – the device was originally developed in order to please the surrounding people with singing at any time and in any place. It is worth noting that such a device copes with its task just perfectly.
However, there are still some limitations. The case does not have high moisture protection. If he can still withstand a light drizzle, then he will no longer be able to handle more serious precipitation, so it is not recommended to sing in heavy rain or snowfall. The same applies to the temperature regime. The microphone can operate in a wide range of temperatures, however, if you want to extend battery life, then it is undesirable to use it in severe frost or in hot weather.
We would recommend setting the volume of the sounding music in advance, but the microphone volume level can and should be changed directly during the performance. In addition, the necessary fader can easily be reached with the thumb of both the right and left hands. The echo effect is built in. It cannot be said that it shows itself well, but to some extent it will be possible to diversify the sound with its help. Due to the button for switching songs, even when using a wireless connection, you can work correctly with gadgets while holding them in your hand.
Pros and cons, main conclusions of Sven MK-960
According to the results of testing this wireless microphone, I would like to note the following advantages:
- Pretty reliable battery that lasts for a long time;
- The battery is standard, so you can additionally purchase a similar or higher capacity;
- There is a wireless Bluetooth channel;
- The device is equipped with a slot for a memory card, which allows you to use it even without external sound sources;
- All buttons are located very conveniently – they are easy to reach with both right and left hands;
- For its cost and capabilities, the device produces quite a decent sound.
Unfortunately, there are also some drawbacks here:
- The sound of a microphone outdoors will feel somewhat weaker than indoors, which happens in similar cases with any speaker systems;
- You need to be careful when working with a microphone in an open space.
In general, as it seemed to us after almost a week of active use of such a microphone, it is actually an amateur toy. For the professional performance of any compositions, it is unlikely to be suitable, but during fun gatherings for people who love to sing, it will turn out to be quite digestible.
