Samsung is one of the leading companies in the electronics market. The brand’s smartphones are considered the pinnacle of Android phone development. It is all the more interesting to compare the products of the South Korean giant with the devices of the popular Chinese brand Xiaomi.
Samsung and Xiaomi smartphones
Samsung devices are the most popular in Russia. Korean smartphones attract attention not only with a big name, but also with their technological features.
Xiaomi has also been developing steadily in recent years, although it has not been in the lead like Samsung. The brand gained a real “second wind” after US sanctions against Huawei, one of its main competitors. The popularity of the models has also skyrocketed in the Russian market. This comes as no surprise since Xiaomi smartphones offer excellent value for money. The brand relies not on flagships, but on affordable, but at the same time very advanced smartphones.
Model range and cost of devices
Both brands offer a large list of smartphones, although phone price range Samsung wider – from budget models cheaper than 10 thousand rubles to the prestigious Galaxy Z Fold with a price of over 150 thousand.
Xiaomi initially specialized in ultra-affordable devices, but over time, near-flagship smartphones costing about 50 thousand rubles began to appear on the market. However, the main driving force behind the brand is still the Redmi line of budget phones, which are considered among the most popular smartphones on the market.
In each price category, you can find similar models of the two companies. Especially in the most extensive segment – up to 30 thousand rubles. They can even be compared. Samsung offers the Galaxy A52 smartphone, which has become the successor to the super-popular Galaxy A51 in Russia. It is opposed by the more affordable (about 20 thousand rubles) Xiaomi Redmi Note 10.
Xiaomi POCO X3 Pro with a powerful Snapdragon 860 processor is estimated a little more expensive – unlike Note 10, it has a display with a refresh rate of 120 Hz.
But the most interesting thing is to compare the most expensive smartphone brands. Samsung has been at the top of the Android phone market for a long time – and for a long time the company had no competitors.
New flagships Xiaomi have equally powerful processors, but are sold at a much lower price. Therefore, the Chinese company will try to add ambiguity among high-end smartphones as well.
Technical characteristics of the flagship models
Design and body
The build quality of Xiaomi smartphones is gradually improving and catching up with the level of brands such as Samsung. Even the budget models of the two companies rarely have manufacturing defects..
Design is a more subjective thing, but sometimes Xiaomi offers an interesting style. For example, inexpensive devices of the Redmi series look a little better than the rustic Samsung Galaxy A12.
But more importantly, the devices of the Chinese brand do not always offer the same level of dust protection and water resistance as the rival.
The flagship Samsung Galaxy S21 is IP68 rated in all configurations, meaning the device is fully protected from dust and can withstand immersion in water to a depth of more than 1 meter. Xiaomi Mi 11 meets this level only in Pro and Ultra variants – the basic version does not have such high protection.
Performance and memory
Smartphones Samsung always offer high performance. This is facilitated by components of our own production, including processors, the list of which is headed by the eight-core Exynos 2100, which is in the TOP-6 of the most powerful mobile CPUs in the world.
But the Chinese have something to answer. Company Xiaomi often uses powerful processors Qualcommincluding Snapdragon 888 in the flagship Mi 11. This CPU is considered the fourth fastest in the world.
In the class of budget smartphones, the situation is also confused. The Qualcomm chipset offers good performance at a moderate price among Xiaomi’s entry-level smartphones. At the same time, there are many devices in the Samsung lineup with both new and outdated, but still effective Exynos processors.
The amount of internal memory is approximately the same everywhere:
- flagships offer 128 GB and more,
- entry-level models are 32, 64 or 128 GB.
The Samsung Galaxy A12, for example, is equipped with 32 GB of storage in the initial configuration and 128 GB in the maximum. Xiaomi Redmi 9 or POCO M3 has a similar range. Almost all brand models (except flagship ones) have a memory card slot to help expand free space.
Smartphones with a capacious battery are found among the devices of both companies. Even budget Samsung models have a 5000 mAh battery – this is enough for a whole day without recharging under load. The situation is the same for Xiaomi phones, where high-capacity batteries are sometimes installed to the detriment of the weight and thickness of the smartphone.
But the actual battery life of the device does not always depend on the capacity of the battery “on paper”. That’s why smartphones Samsung still work longer than models Xiaomi – because of energy-saving displays.
The flagship Xiaomi 11, on the contrary, is discharged faster than the Galaxy S21 – the processor is not very energy efficient.
Samsung is considered a leader in mobile phone displays. Even Apple uses matrices created by a South Korean company for its iPhones.
In addition, the brand is not afraid to experiment. A characteristic feature of the Samsung lineup are flexible high-end Galaxy Z Fold smartphones with dual displays. But there is also a minus – the company’s phones do not provide DC Dimming technology, which reduces the frequency of screen flicker. With it, the user’s eyes would be less tired.
Xiaomi smartphones also have high-quality displays, especially considering the low cost of devices. But real good screens from the “Chinese” are found mainly in the middle and high price categories. Budget models rarely give a really nice picture.
At the same time, both manufacturers have phones that support refresh rates up to 120 Hz – this is important for games and video playback.
Xiaomi uses modules created with the participation of the German company Leica, which specializes in the production of photographic equipment. Flagship cameras are called the strength of the Chinese brand, but high-quality shooting cannot be achieved on budget and even middle-class models. At the same time, Xiaomi sometimes experiments by installing, for example, a retractable front camera – although not all users will appreciate this solution.
That’s why in terms of cameras Samsung as long as it has an advantage over its competitor, despite the efforts of Xiaomi. Even affordable Korean smartphones are equipped with high-quality cameras – perhaps the best in their price segment.
They also have a weak point: budget Samsung shoot rather poor wide-angle photos, yielding to rival devices. But the flagships are superior to Xiaomi in almost all respects: from color reproduction to night mode and video stabilization.
Smartphones of the two brands support the same operating system – Android, but each company uses its own shell over the base OS.
Devices Xiaomi did not fall under US sanctions, so they retained support for Google services. The company has developed its own MIUI interface, which differs from the basic Android OS in flexible settings.
The platform is trying to make better use of the hardware potential of the smartphone with the help of software functions. But all this causes difficulties: users will need time to get acquainted with the Xiaomi shell. Although those who already owned Chinese smartphones get used to them faster.
Samsung supports the One UI add-on – this feature-packed interface is carefully polished by developers. But some users still criticize the shell due to bloated software and some optimization issues.
At the same time, it is worth noting an important advantage of Samsung, which distinguishes the brand from other manufacturers of Android devices: the company constantly updates software and supports old smartphones for a long time.
Here, the smartphones of the two companies are roughly on the same level: almost all the latest models support 5G technology, many phones offer a 3.5mm audio jack for wired headphones.
For a long time, Xiaomi lacked the useful NFC feature that helps pay for purchases using a smartphone. But since 2019, the NFC module began to appear in all but the most budget devices.
In other aspects, the Chinese brand is no worse, if not better than Samsung: even affordable models support Face ID for face recognition and offer a built-in FM tuner that works without the need to connect headphones.
What about ecosystems
The brand is trying to keep up with the main competitor in the smartphone market – Apple, which is famous for its advanced technology ecosystem. And Samsung succeeds in many ways: the brand already has the most developed ecosystem among Android devices.
Its center, as expected, is a smartphone with an installed application. SmartThings. With the help of this program, other devices are controlled. No difficulties arise: you only need a Samsung account and access to the Internet.
In addition, the ecosystem offers a number of useful features:
- Convenient interaction between devices. You can, for example, write text on a tablet and then edit it on a smartphone. Synchronization is available not only for gadgets based on Android, but also for computers with Windows OS.
- Useful mode DeX – the smartphone can be connected to a TV or monitor, which will turn the phone into a real PC with a comfortable desktop. Computer peripherals are also supported, including mice and keyboards. The only negative is that the mode only works on Samsung flagships or tablets.
- Application SmartThings helps find lost devices by guiding the user to the smart tag.
The owner of a Samsung smartphone will be interested in wearable devices offered by the company. Watches are popular among Android users Galaxy watch. These are expensive, but high-quality gadgets – perhaps the most advanced on the market.
With the help of such a device, you can receive calls and answer messages, measure pressure, pulse and oxygen content in the blood. The user is also provided with a huge selection of dials. The main disadvantage of the Galaxy Watch is the high price.
Popular Samsung headphones stand out Galaxy Buds live worth about 6 thousand rubles. This is a stylish TWS model with a small case, working with a multi-functional smartphone application.
The program offers an equalizer, touch control settings, different operating modes. The sound quality of the headphones is not at the highest level, but active noise cancellation is provided.
Significantly more expensive (over 12 thousand) are Galaxy Buds Pro. These are flagship in-ear headphones with powerful ANC, perfectly adapted to Android smartphones. Their operating time without recharging reaches 5 hours. Headphones have expressive sound, but do not support advanced aptX-level codecs.
The Chinese brand is also developing its own ecosystem, which is not so difficult for Xiaomi: the company produces almost every conceivable electronics, from light bulbs to smartphones.
Smart watches and fitness bracelets
Xiaomi Mi watch is a smartwatch with a bright rounded AMOLED display. The device is capable of receiving notifications, measuring blood oxygen levels, counting calories and much more. At the same time, the cost of the watch is about 8-9 thousand rubles, which is noticeably less than the price of analogues from Samsung, where even the early Galaxy Watch3 costs about 20 thousand rubles.
There is also an inexpensive bracelet Xiaomi Mi Band 6. It is equipped with a slightly elongated display – as befits a fitness tracker. There are 30 workout modes, and the large screen is protected by tempered glass. The battery life of the device is 14 days.
Xiaomi Redmi AirDots – one of the most affordable wireless devices that deserve attention. These are small and very comfortable headphones worth 2-3 thousand rubles, stored in a simple case. The sound quality is at a good level, although not comparable to high-end models.
The products of both companies have numerous fans, although there is now a large gap between the brands.
Xiaomi is still developing, trying to stand on a par with such giants as Samsung and Apple. The Chinese firm aims mainly at low-cost smartphones. Among the brand’s models, you can find budget devices with good performance, battery life and image quality.
The main advantages of Xiaomi:
- Beautiful value for money – the main advantage of the company’s smartphones. A comparable Samsung phone is likely to cost much more.
- Long working life even budget models – but because of the capacious battery, devices are usually more bulky than competitors.
- flexible shell MIUI allows you to customize the interface and supports many useful features: traffic monitoring, power saving mode, blocking unwanted calls, and more.
- Ecosystem Xiaomi not yet as developed as that of Samsung or Apple, but is rapidly improving. All devices, from smartphones to household appliances, are organically linked into a single network.
- Artificially inflated lineup makes it difficult to choose phones. There are many devices for sale at a similar price and with similar functionality. There is no such clear hierarchy as, for example, Apple.
- Apps that can’t be removed in the OS – despite the flexibility of MIUI, there is no way to get rid of some programs.
- Not so long support for software updateslike Samsung.
Now let’s look at Samsung. The main direction of the company in the smartphone market is mid-range and high-end models, including status phones. Among the main advantages of the equipment of the South Korean brand:
- Main part of electronics components created by the company, so Samsung does not depend on other manufacturers. This helps to most effectively combine the hardware of gadgets with software, to introduce innovations faster.
- Associated with the first point is screen quality Samsung – Korean matrices are bought even by brand competitors. At the same time, display technologies are constantly improving.
- Due to the popularity of the brand and the development level of the company, service centres Samsung found in many cities – You will not have problems with the repair of equipment or warranty service.
- Main for the user – price. Xiaomi devices are almost always cheaper – even with close specifications.
- Sometimes Samsung devices have strange problemssuch as the non-disabled and non-configurable Bixby voice assistant button on smartphone models released before 2019.
Tampering with the software and obtaining root rights leads to removal of the gadget from warranty service.
In the battle of flagships, Samsung clearly wins, whose top models are stronger than competitors’ devices – both in image quality and display, and in battery life.
But in the category of affordable smartphones, Xiaomi attracts attention with a favorable combination of performance and price – here it is worth considering choosing a Chinese phone instead of a Korean one.
