Who will benefit?
First of all, those whose pets are on the street. And we are talking not only about the summer cottage, where the animal is left to its own devices, but also about walks under your supervision. After all, even when you are near a pet, it can get lost from sight, fall into the wrong hands, or simply run away to where it smells delicious. With the tracker, you don’t have to worry about where your cat or dog is wandering – just open the app on your smartphone and see the pet’s geolocation.
What does it look like?
It can be a one-piece collar or a beacon that is attached to a strap. Now it is easy to find compact models that will not cause discomfort to the animal.
And is it legal?
Yes! A GPS collar is not some kind of spy thing that will immediately put you in jail for it. No special permission or registration is required to purchase and use it. If you are still afraid that people in uniform will follow you, ask the seller for a certificate stating that this tracker is not a special technical device. And, of course, use it for its intended purpose. If you wish, you can give the tracker to a child or an elderly relative – but then do not forget to warn them about this method of care.
How it works?
Without going into theory: a GPS tracker is a small chip that receives data about its location from satellites and transmits it to the owner of the tracker. If satellites are not available, the tracker determines the location by cellular networks (operator towers). For maximum accuracy, some models use several positioning modes at once.
Communication with the owner of the collar is carried out via GPRS or GSM channel, in other words, using the mobile Internet. To do this, the tracker needs a SIM card that supports the 2G standard or higher. The user is required to go to the manufacturer’s website or download the tracker application on a smartphone, enter the device ID and observe the marks on the map.
Depending on the polling frequency of the GPS tracker, you can not only find out the current location of the object, but also track the trajectory of its movement. The error in determining the location depends on the terrain (dense forest, field, urban development …) and ranges from 2 to 150 meters.
With a GPS collar, you can track where your pet is walking and how much time it spends on the neighbor’s lawn. Letting your pet go on a completely free voyage will not work: trackers run on batteries or a battery, and in any case, you will have to monitor their charge level. However, energy can be saved: the less often the location data is requested, the longer the device works. The polling interval is set in the tracker app or web interface.
Many GPS collars allow you to set up geofences: limit the space that is safe for your pet. If the cat runs too far, a notification will be sent to the owner’s phone.
There are many models of GPS collars, but they differ only in secondary functions: somewhere the water resistance is higher, others have a speaker and a microphone, somewhere the receiver supports 4G … All this, of course, is good, but all models perform the main role in approximately the same way. The main thing is that the chip supports GPS and works with your mobile operator. Here are two popular gadgets on the market.
For dogs: GPS collar Smart Pet Tracker
The Smart Pet Tracker model determines the dog’s location using GPS signals and the location of GSM stations and sends the coordinates directly to the owner’s smartphone. The definition accuracy is up to 5 meters, which is very good for a “household” receiver. The tracker is compact and weighs only 30 grams, the collar strap is adjustable and will fit both large and small breeds of dogs.
The manufacturer promises that the tracker will last 5 days without recharging, but we know that it all depends on how often you request the coordinates of your pet. If the battery runs low, the gadget will send a notification to the owner’s smartphone.
Smart Pet Tracker has a microphone and speaker, which means you can call your pet and eavesdrop on what is happening around. Well, or give the command to return home, as the manufacturer suggests. The model has dust and moisture protection according to IP66 – the tracker is not afraid of rain, but it will not withstand long bathing. If your pet loves water, we advise you to purchase a sealed case or tracker with IPx8 protection.
For cats: Fetureway GPS collar
In principle, trackers for cats and dogs differ only in size – a cat needs a smaller gadget so that its weight does not become a heavy burden for the animal. Weighing only 21 grams, the Fetureway model is suitable not only for cats, but also for other small pets, such as domestic ferrets.
The tracker determines the geolocation using GPS + AGPS, and also takes into account the location of the operator’s towers. GPS error here is also about 5 meters, and the operating time is up to 5 days. However, for such a long time the tracker will work only in the most energy-saving mode if you update the coordinates once an hour.
There are no speakers and a microphone here – but they are not needed, because “cats walk by themselves” and rarely listen to what they are told. But the gadget is protected by IP67 and will withstand immersion in water up to 1m. This feature is unlikely to be useful for cats, but it will be useful for small dogs and other water-loving animals.
For both cats and dogs: the PETCARE collar
The PETCARE collar is worn on a dog or cat. Not only can you attach the address of the owner to it – it will always help the owner find his beloved “lost” himself. In fact, a small block with a chrome trim, inserted into the front of the collar, is a mobile phone.
The GPS module built into the collar allows you to determine the location of a four-legged friend with an accuracy of up to five meters, and the cellular communication module from the inserted SIM card sends the coordinates to the owner. In the application, you can monitor where the cat walks by itself, and raise an alarm, for example, if the animal goes out of range. The battery lasts up to six days on a single charge.
But such a collar is not the cheapest – it can be ordered online for $69.99. However, you must agree that the feeling of loss, when a beloved four-legged friend disappears without a trace, cannot be redeemed by any money. Therefore, the price in this case is secondary and does not play a special role.
bluetooth pet pendant
Even pets that do not walk outside can get lost – they know how to hide in such a way that it is more difficult to find them than a second sock after washing. If your cat decides to go into seclusion and cry about sins, you can lose him even in a one-room apartment. When you have already checked all the cabinets, run around all the surrounding courtyards and get ready to call the police, the beast will calmly leave the room, shaking off the dust from its mustache. And where did he manage to hide?
If you, as a cat owner, have encountered this behavior more than once, a collar with a Bluetooth pendant can seriously help you out.
smart tracker Redmond SkyTracker 08S =”content_internal_link”>uses Bluetooth to search for items within a 10-meter radius. It is small, weighs like a ten-ruble coin and mates with a smartphone, allowing you to find an object within its range using a special Ready for Sky application. If an object is outside the Bluetooth radius, a loud squeak is heard. So even if the cat hides, it will not be difficult to find him with such a pendant.
The Bluetooth harness is also useful for dog lovers: it can be used instead of a leash. If your dog is non-aggressive, and you let him run and play quietly, the harness will not allow the animal to run further than 10 meters from you.
