The best mid-range mirrorless cameras

The first selection is devoted to relatively inexpensive mirrorless cameras, which can be attributed to the conditional middle class. In 2021, the situation in this segment of the electronics market is rather ambiguous. So, for example, in retail there are plenty of good-quality DSLRs at a price of about 20 thousand rubles or even less, at a time when mirrorless mirrors of similar price are practically unavailable, and it is quite difficult to find them. This, of course, is not about “soap dishes”, but about cameras with interchangeable lenses. Therefore, our experts took into account only those options that are presented in an acceptable amount in many points of sale. And the price threshold in this case is much higher than that of the most inexpensive DSLRs available.

Canon EOS M50 Kit black 15-45mm IS STM LP-E12

Rating: 4.5

Canon EOS M50 Kit black 15-45mm IS STM LP-E12

The review will open with a set of Canon EOS M50 body and 15-45mm IS STM LP-E12 lens. This is an entry-level system camera with a very broad functionality and remarkable technical characteristics. Actually, the capabilities of this model are even significantly higher than the entry level, despite such an official positioning. In mid-2021, a set costs about 48 thousand rubles.

This model is one of the successful incarnations of the M series and, collectively, Canon’s first digital mirrorless camera capable of shooting video in 4K 3840×2160. But, of course, the main thing here is far from video shooting.

Canon EOS M50 is notable for a whole set of characteristics. The developers have tried to take all the best from previously released cameras, while maintaining a compact size and reasonable price. They succeeded to the fullest. The camera received a high-quality matrix with a resolution of 24.1 megapixels APS-C format (crop factor – 1.6), a powerful DIGIC 8 processor, advanced Dual Pixel CMOS AF autofocus technology, a swivel 3-inch touch screen, wireless communication and much more. Further about the most important thing in more detail.

With regards to the matrix, in digital photography, 24 megapixel resolution is quite a lot, but for an entry-level camera, it’s not bad at all. Autofocus is even more remarkable – the Dual Pixel CMOS AF system includes more than a hundred autofocus points, which, together with a powerful processor, gives accurate, fast and tenacious focusing.

The same processor performs well in continuous shooting, the speed of which is very impressive for this class of device – 10 frames per second. The buffer is medium in size, designed for 10 RAW photos or 33 JPEG photos. There is an electronic viewfinder in the usual place, in addition, the 3-inch swivel LCD screen can also perform the viewfinder function. It is also touch-sensitive with extensive touch controls.

The device is equipped with a USB 2.0 connector, HDMI, external microphone jack, wireless modules Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and NFC. The battery is nominally rated for 235 shots. This figure looks “pale” against the background of many hundreds and even more than a thousand conditional shots in medium-sized DSLRs, but this is a characteristic feature of mirrorless devices, where the electronic viewfinder “eats up” the lion’s share of the charge.

From the review of a Yandex.Market user with the Level 6 Gadget Inspector status: “Great design and size. Swivel display and resolution. Dual Pixel – tap focus. Processor – fast startup, shooting speed. Built-in external sound recording system – you can be proud – no one else has it.

Advantages

  • high resolution matrix;

  • advanced autofocus system;

  • powerful processor;

  • fast continuous shooting;

  • the speed of work in general;

  • shooting video in 4K (frequency only up to 30 fps);

  • convenient management;

  • wireless modules Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and NFC;

  • cute design.

Flaws

  • shooting video in 4K with serious limitations;

  • lack of battery capacity.

Fujifilm X-T30 Kit silver 15-45mm f/3.5-5.6 OIS PZ

Rating: 4.5

Fujifilm X-T30 Kit silver 15-45mm f/3.5-5.6 OIS PZ

The second number in the selection of the best mid-range mirrorless cameras is the popular model of the Fujifilm brand, which has been competing with market leaders with varying success for many years. The kit includes the X-T30 camera and a versatile lens. Such kits with a kit lens are often recommended for beginners, and this is quite reasonable. The only thing is that not every newcomer will be ready to pay about 75 thousand rubles.

This model is a continuation of the third generation of Fujifilm cameras, the main feature of which is a back-illuminated matrix. The X-T30 is a modification of the flagship Fujifilm X-T3, a somewhat simplified and more affordable option.

To begin with, in the “blitz” format, we will list the most noticeable advantages of this model, and then we will dwell on the most remarkable of them.

So, here we have a “cropped” matrix with a crop factor of 1.5, but with a high resolution of 26 megapixels and the backlight mentioned above. Tenacious and accurate hybrid autofocus, which uses as many as 425 phase sensors across the entire frame area. When autofocusing, the device distinguishes between faces and eyes. Wide sensitivity range from 160 to 12800 ISO. In advanced mode – from 80 to 51200 ISO.

The function of continuous shooting is very worthily implemented – the “rate of fire” is up to 20 and even up to 30 frames per second, depending on whether scaling is applied. You can monitor the process through the electronic viewfinder or through the LCD screen. The latter is convenient in that it is touch and swivel.

Very pleased with the set of camera interfaces. There is Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, HDMI, microphone input, headphone output, remote control jack. Also, of course, there is a USB connection, but not a simple one, but version 3.1 on the Type-C socket with full functionality – data transfer and charging. The device supports memory cards of large capacity – up to 512 GB.

Ordinary users most often respond positively in comments about the compact size of the camera, tenacious and accurate autofocus, color reproduction and adequate white balance. Opinions about the battery were significantly divided – one part of the users notes that the battery lasts for much more shots than stated by the manufacturer, the other complains about the lack of charge. In independent tests, experts confirm that the actual autonomy approximately corresponds to the declared one.

Advantages

  • matrix with high resolution and back illumination;

  • the quality of the “picture”, especially in terms of adequate white balance;

  • fast and high-quality autofocus;

  • top “rate of fire” during continuous shooting;

  • solid whale lens;

  • integration with wearable gadgets;

  • numerous and flexible settings;

  • USB Type-C with full functionality (data transfer and charging);

  • swivel LCD touch screen.

Flaws

  • a noticeable percentage of complaints about an uncomfortable “childish” grip (a consequence of compactness).

Canon EOS RP Body black

Rating: 4.6

Canon EOS RP Body black

Next in the review is another Canon camera. When looking at the characteristics, it may seem that it clearly loses to the previous Fujifilm X-T30, while being significantly more expensive – about 90 thousand rubles in the summer of 2021. Indeed, some characteristics look more modest. But many users are willing to accept compromises thanks to one important advantage – the camera is full-frame.

Indeed, there is a high-quality Full frame matrix with a size of 35.9×24 mm and a resolution of 26 megapixels (6240×4160). Equivalent light sensitivity – from 100 to 40000 ISO, in extended modes – up to 102400 ISO. There is a cleaning function of the matrix.

In this model, the manufacturer has properly worked out the autofocus functionality, and did it so carefully that in this generation the camera literally surprises with speed, accuracy, focusing tenacity.

An important and pleasant moment is that this camera finally has the ability to see in the electronic viewfinder not just a display of what gets into the frame, but the final picture that will turn out when all the settings are applied. And the viewfinder itself pleases with the quality – it was created using OLED technology, provides excellent visibility with 100% frame coverage.

Even in this model there is a whole list of nuances, which individually, as it were, are not something special, but greatly simplify the work of the photographer. For example, the same Canon RF mount – it is compatible with Canon EF and Canon EF-S optics through an adapter, which makes the device generally universal in terms of interchangeable lenses.

The reaction of users in the reviews on the marketplaces for this camera is extremely positive. Many of the reviews are emphatically emotional, often buyers compare this model with their previous cameras, and note a serious difference in many important characteristics. These are often dimensions and weight, ease of control and use in general, predictability and reliability, accuracy of compliance with the declared characteristics. Many note the appearance of “long-awaited” functions such as displaying the final picture in the electronic viewfinder and much more. Criticisms concern mainly the obviously weak battery.

From the review of a Yandex.Market user with the status “Gadget Inspector Level 6”: “After the 650D, it’s just a delight. Turn on auto mode and shoot. Built-in HDR eliminates unnecessary steps in LightRoom for stitching frames. Shadows are perfectly drawn from RAW. Compatibility with EF and EF-S optics is generally a beauty.”

Advantages

  • full-frame matrix;

  • a high resolution;

  • powerful Digic 8 processor;

  • large burst buffer;

  • video recording in 4K 3840×2160 (but low frame rate);

  • wide range of photosensitivity;

  • high-quality OLED viewfinder with 100% coverage;

  • almost universal mount;

  • touch screen;

  • smartphone control.

Flaws

  • Definitely a weak battery.

Sony Alpha ILCE-6600 Body black

Rating: 4.7

Sony Alpha ILCE-6600 Body black

Complete the selection of the best mid-range mirrorless cameras model manufactured by Sony. This camera is already close to the professional premium class. This can be seen primarily in the characteristics. The price of this model in 2021 in Russian online stores is about 120 thousand rubles. The figure looks big, but in fact it is an average level, and below popular models will be presented much more expensive.

This model has a number of important improvements, both in comparison with the previous generation – Sony A6100, and in comparison with competitive products of other market leaders comparable in price. The mere fact that five-axis matrix-shift stabilization is implemented here brings the camera closer to professional premium models. But that’s not all.

The manufacturer completely retained the more than successful autofocus system that impressed users of the Sony A6100. This is a hybrid autofocus based on 425 points, phase and contrast.

The burst shooting speed is 11 frames per second, which is quite a good result. Especially against the backdrop of a very voluminous buffer – up to 46 shots for RAW format and up to 116 for JPEG. Tracking is primarily an electronic viewfinder with twice the resolution of the previous generation – more than 2.3 million dots. The viewfinder can also be used with a 3-inch tilting LCD touchscreen. Tilt up to 180 degrees, down – up to 74 degrees.

Separately, it should be said that in this model the manufacturer did not stint on the battery in terms of capacity. The declared resource of one full charge is conditional 810 shots. Users in the reviews for the most part confirm that the autonomy of this camera is really impressive.

The reaction of users to this model for the most part is emphatically positive. There are individual criticisms, among which there is practically only one systematic, but important. Many users notice some color inconsistency in pictures saved in JPEG format. While in the RAW format, there are no such troubles. And although a significant part of users of this flaw does not notice and does not complain, it should still be credited as a disadvantage.

Advantages

  • a high resolution;

  • effective autofocus, including on the eyes;

  • five-axis matrix shift stabilization;

  • large burst buffer;

  • high resolution viewfinder;

  • touchscreen;

  • shooting video in 4K 3840×2160;

  • wireless modules, including NFC;

  • capacious battery;

  • metal case.

Flaws

  • user complaints about incorrect color reproduction in JPEG.

Best Premium Professional Mirrorless Cameras

In the second selection of the best mirrorless cameras reviewed by Expertology magazine, we will look at high-level cameras that are gradually but surely replacing their mirrorless “brothers” in the arsenal of professional photographers and photo artists. The price tag in this conditional category has a very high ceiling. Our experts chose the best of those models that cost at least less than half a million rubles.

Sony Alpha ILCE-7M3 Body black

Rating: 4.7

Sony Alpha ILCE-7M3 Body black

First, let’s look at the most inexpensive option for a premium camera made by Sony. At one time, this camera became a real event. And the reason for the furore was not top-end characteristics, but a combination of characteristics and cost. Engineers took all the best from the much more expensive ILCE-7RM3 and ILCE-9 models, everything that did not critically affect the final cost. As a result, an incredibly successful “hybrid” appeared with a price tag in 2021 of about 150 thousand rubles. The “alias” of this model is Sony Alpha 7 III, for many this is a more recognizable wording.

The first and for many the most important thing is that it is a full-frame sensor. Resolution – 24MP (6000×4000 pixels). Color depth – 42 bits. Equivalent light sensitivity – from 100 to 3200 ISO, in extended modes – up to 204800 ISO. There is an ultrasonic cleaning of the matrix, but not all users are satisfied with its effectiveness, some recommend purchasing a specialized manual cleaning kit. Another important point is the back-illuminated matrix (BSI). Experts suggest that this is the same sensor used in the flagship Sony A9, only without internal memory.

The burst shooting speed is decent – 10 frames per second. You can shoot long bursts thanks to a truly large buffer – 89 frames for RAW and 163 for JPEG. Also, the camera is capable of shooting video in 4K resolution 3840×2160.

Separately, it is worth saying a few kind words about the speed of the entire system. A powerful BIONZ X image processor and an LSI preprocessor, which performs the functions of a linear system integrator, are involved directly in the shooting. With this feature, the camera reads and processes data almost twice as fast as the previous generation ILCE-7M2 cameras.

In reviews on trading platforms, users most of all emphasize high-quality and fast autofocus, precise focusing on the eyes, the quality and purity of the “picture” in general, a capacious battery, and ergonomics. Criticisms concern mainly minor things, and only the LCD screen receives systematic complaints with its weak “maneuverability” and distortion of shades.

From the review of a Yandex.Market user with the Level 4 Gadget Inspector status: “I have been using it for more than two years, and the ability to transfer photos to a smartphone is still an incredible miracle for me. Very comfortably! Silent Electronic Shutter (Stealth Reporting Bomb).”

Advantages

  • full-frame back-illuminated sensor;

  • tenacious tracking autofocus, aiming at the eyes of people and animals;

  • well-developed extended dynamic range;

  • shooting video in 4K 3840×2160;

  • large buffer for continuous shooting;

  • two slots for memory cards;

  • capacious battery;

  • combination of price and features.

Flaws

  • user complaints about the LCD screen.

Canon EOS R6 Body black

Rating: 4.8

Canon EOS R6 Body black

The second number in the premium selection is the more expensive and more interesting mirrorless camera made by Canon. This is EOS R6, which in the summer of 2021 in Russia costs about 210 thousand rubles. Here we will talk about the “carcass” itself, and kits with a whale lens are also on sale. Note that although the EOS R6 is “chronologically” perceived as a more advanced model than the previous generation EOS R5, the opposite is true here – the EOS R6 was created as a somewhat simplified and more affordable version of the flagship EOS R5.

This is also a full-frame camera with a 20 megapixel resolution matrix (5472×3648) and 42-bit color depth. Equivalent light sensitivity – from 100 to 102400 ISO, in extended modes – ISO50 and ISO204800. There is a function of image stabilization and ultrasonic cleaning of the matrix. Moreover, the stabilization is completely taken from the flagship EOS R5, and this is more than good. A resolution of 20 megapixels may seem suspiciously small, but in fact it is quite enough even for shooting materials for large format printing.

In terms of formats and methods of shooting, this model has something to brag about. So, for example, continuous shooting here can be carried out at a speed twice as high as that of the previous model – 20 frames per second. The buffer is even larger – up to 120 shots in RAW format and up to 1000 in JPEG. The video recording capabilities are noteworthy – the device can shoot videos in resolutions up to 4K 3840×2160 with a comfortable fps 60, and in FullHD 1920 × 1080 at 120 frames per second.

What is definitely better worked out in this device than in the EOS R5 is autonomy. The standard battery when fully charged is enough for 510 shots when using the screen and 380 shots when using the electronic viewfinder.

As befits any high-end digital camera, this model is equipped with a wide range of interfaces. There is Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, HDMI, audio inputs / outputs and high-speed USB 3.1. As a more economical option, the camera allows you to use not the most expensive ordinary memory cards, duplicates the captured content automatically on the second card to insure against the loss of valuable frames.

In their reviews, users most often note the high quality of autofocus across the entire field of the frame, the presence of stabilization in the “carcass”, the simultaneous use of two memory cards, ease of use, moisture protection, “rate of fire” and dynamic range.

Advantages

  • image stabilization;

  • dust and moisture protection;

  • shooting video in 4K with fps 60 and in FullHD 1920 × 1080 with fps 120;

  • top burst shooting speed;

  • large buffer for continuous shooting;

  • swivel LCD touch screen;

  • recording on two memory cards;

  • capacious battery.

Flaws

  • 20MP resolution is not enough for a noticeable part of users.

Sony Alpha ILCE-7SM3 Body black

Rating: 4.8

Sony Alpha ILCE-7SM3 Body black

Next in the selection is another Sony Alpha series camera, which, even according to the specification, is almost indistinguishable from the ILCE-7M3 described above. But the single and subtle “S” index reflects the dramatic difference in performance and price. The model was released last year in 2020 and in the summer of 2021 it costs about 320 thousand rubles.

Immediately you need to warn potential buyers that this camera has a fairly pronounced specialization in the direction of video shooting. It was on this function that the main efforts of the developers were directed, and for optimization it was decided to sacrifice the resolution.

Thus, this camera uses an Exmor R CMOS sensor, full-frame, with a resolution of 12 megapixels and back light. Color depth – 48 bits. Equivalent ISO 80 to 102400 ISO, Extended Mode 409600 ISO. There is image stabilization – optical and through the matrix shift.

The back-illuminated sensor architecture delivers flawless photos and videos at ISO 6400, with no visible noise, loss of detail or contrast. At higher sensitivities, noise will appear, and this is not a drawback, since it cannot be completely avoided yet. But due to the quality and architecture of the matrix, the level of these noises will be significantly lower than that of competitive models.

Of greatest interest is how the function of shooting video is implemented in this model. The camera can shoot in resolutions up to 4K 3840×2160, and, characteristically, a frame rate of 120 fps is supported at the maximum resolution. Very few cameras are capable of this. The maximum frequency, subject to a lower resolution, is 200 fps.

Users often leave extremely positive feedback about this camera, emphasizing that they were looking forward to it, as they learned from the announcements about the optimal functionality for video shooting. Criticisms concern mainly only the price and clearly mediocre photography capabilities. The manufacturer, according to some users, placed too much emphasis on video, neglecting photography.

From the review of a Yandex.Market user with the Level 4 Gadget Inspector status: “Probably the best camera for video shooting, which will be relevant for another 5 years. 4k at 100fps, 10 bit 4.2.2 in any shooting modes, choice of codecs and compression. The feeling that Sony took into account all the wishes of users and decided to finally fix the shortcomings of past generations.

Advantages

  • full-frame back-illuminated sensor;

  • optical stabilization and matrix shift;

  • large buffer for continuous shooting;

  • swivel LCD touch screen;

  • USB 3.2 Type-C with charging support;

  • video recording in 4K 3840×2160 at 120 frames per second;

  • 8x digital zoom;

  • dust protection;

  • flawless autofocus performance up to 4K video mode 3840×2160 120 fps.

Flaws

  • mediocre photography.

Sony Alpha ILCE-9M2 Body black

Rating: 4.9

Sony Alpha ILCE-9M2 Body black

The review of the best mirrorless cameras according to Expertology magazine will be completed by the updated “nine” of the Sony Alpha line. Its first version was released in 2017 and became a real event in the industry. Then the “nine” was repeatedly refined, but not too significantly. And the real serious improvements appeared already in this model, which was released on the eve of the Olympic Games held in the summer of 2021 in Tokyo. At the time of preparation of the material, the camera costs about 365 thousand rubles in the Russian Federation. The recognizable “pseudonym” of the model is Sony Alpha 9 II.

One of the most remarkable moments in this camera is the matrix. It practically remained unchanged compared to the first Sony Alpha 9. And not because the manufacturer decided to save money, but because that matrix was seriously ahead of its time and its characteristics would be enough for a few more years to ensure market leadership.

What is unique about this matrix? A resolution of 24 megapixels will not particularly impress anyone, but the special multilayer structure of the sensor will impress. Under the thinnest layer of the pixels themselves is another layer, which is actually a microcircuit – it includes a high-speed signal processing circuit and built-in memory. Thanks to this circuitry, the manufacturer received a much higher read speed. And the importance of this improvement concerns not so much continuous shooting, although it too, but the correct functioning of the electronic shutter. It is thanks to such a high-tech and expensive solution that the camera copes with the effect of rolling shutter (distortion of moving objects), the appearance of stripes from flickering sources and other undesirable phenomena in dynamics.

Even in this camera, autofocus is most carefully worked out. It is, as is typical for mirrorless cameras, hybrid – phase contrast. To focus, phase sensors on the matrix are used, and, in addition, the sharpness of the “image” at the final stage of focusing is taken into account. The system produces 60 measurements per second, so that with the most dynamic shooting, you can count on a high-quality result. Helping to achieve the highest image quality is a new processor, which, paired with the LSI pre-processor, provides an almost unparalleled smoothness, accuracy and predictability of the autofocus system.

The camera has undergone a major upgrade in terms of interaction with memory cards. There are two slots for memory cards with the function of synchronous recording-duplicate, and, most importantly, they now support high-speed SD UHS-II memory.

Advantages

  • the long-awaited novelty of 2020;

  • full-frame matrix with high resolution;

  • matrix with built-in memory and high-speed signal processing;

  • effective relief of the rolling shutter effect and other undesirable phenomena;

  • effective hybrid autofocus;

  • two slots for memory cards with synchronous recording;

  • support for high-speed SD UHS-II memory cards;

  • dual band high speed Wi-Fi.

Flaws

  • weight distribution unusual for many users – the carcass is much lighter than any lens.
