Radio receivers are gradually losing their relevance. Now many people prefer to listen to music via the Internet, or download it to a flash drive. However, there remains a separate layer of consumers who are still actively listening to the radio. Sometimes they do this not even for the sake of music, but for the sake of receiving information – it is no accident that talk radio stations have remained popular for many years. That is why the Expertology online magazine decided to talk about the best radios among those sold in Russian retail. We will talk about both pocket models, the most relevant for use in nature, and stationary devices.

How to choose a radio receiver

To some, it may seem that buying a radio is a trifling matter. However, in fact, the choice of such a device can cause certain difficulties. The fact is that now there are a large number of varieties of radio receivers. And you also need to keep in mind the numerous characteristics.

First of all, you need to decide for what purpose the device is being purchased. It depends on what design the selected radio receiver will have. The most common types are:

  1. Pocket radio – has a very small size. Most often, such devices do not even provide manual frequency tuning – they include an electronic FM scanner. Well, you can completely forget about additional ranges – tiny dimensions do not allow embedding their support.
  2. Portable radio – also can work on batteries or a rechargeable battery, but its dimensions no longer allow you to place the device in your pocket.
  3. Stationary radio receiver – Runs on electricity. Often allows you to listen not only to the FM band, but also to the SV. Some models allow you to connect an external antenna, so they can be used at a great distance from large settlements.
  4. Radio alarm clock – a separate class of devices, characterized by the presence of a timer. Such a device can also have a bright backlight, thanks to which awakening becomes more pleasant.

Next, you can think about the appearance of the radio. Especially if a stationary model is purchased. For example, devices made in retro style are now popular – they really look very interesting.

Previously, we would advise to pay attention to support for additional bands (LW, MW and HF). But now radio stations are almost completely abandoning their use. Instead, we advise taking a model with manual frequency setting. It will cost more, but with it you can listen to the radio even if its wave is barely caught – auto search would simply miss such a station. The disadvantage of such a radio is the lack of a quick transition from one station to another. Therefore, if the device will be located in one place, then it is better to take a model with auto search.

Particularly expensive radios can please LCD display. Basically, it displays the current frequency of the radio station. And if the device is endowed with support RDS, then it will show the name of the song. Also, a radio with a display can be used to find out the time.

Attention should also be paid to number of speakers. Miniature and inexpensive models usually provide only mono sound. More expensive devices please with stereo sound. And the vast majority of radios have 3.5mm audio outputto which you can connect headphones. And it will not be superfluous to know output power. This setting affects how loud the music can sound.

Different radios may have different types of power supply. It may be as follows:

  1. Mains operation – if there is no outlet nearby, then such a device will be completely useless. It turns out that the radio is stationary.
  2. Work from the built-in accumulator – a convenient option when the device only needs a socket for recharging. But we do not recommend counting on a long time of sounding.
  3. Battery operation – in some cases, the user will like it the most. Usually one set is enough for many tens, and sometimes hundreds of hours. And when the batteries are dead, it is enough to put a new set.
  4. Finally, many radios offer additional functionality. Most often, it consists in playing music from a memory card or USB drive. If you prefer to listen not only to the radio, then we advise you to take just such a model. Also in some retail chains you can find devices sharpened, including under internet radio. This significantly increases the number of stations that you could familiarize yourself with (connection to the global web is usually implemented via Wi-Fi).

But enough of the lyrics. Let’s find out which modern radios are the best of their kind. To find out, we conducted a large-scale study, during which an unimaginable number of reviews were read. We also got acquainted with the range of stores selling similar goods, including foreign ones. You will be surprised, but it is still quite wide.

Tecsun PL-660

Rating: 4.9

  Tecsun PL-660

High-quality radios capable of catching waves in different frequency ranges are now expensive. For example, for Tecsun PL-660 in our country they ask for at least 7 thousand rubles. For this money, the buyer receives a device that can operate either from the mains or from four AA batteries. The second option is used more often, since this radio is used by many people in nature. The device includes a segment display that displays information about the current frequency, battery charge and even the signal level. The receiver has a certain amount of memory where favorite frequencies are stored. In the future, you can call up your favorite radio stations by pressing the number buttons.

The device included in our rating is capable of operating in the FM, AIR, SW, AM, LW and SSB bands. For most people, this set is enough. Other features of the device include the presence of a clock and a timer. The manufacturer did not forget about the headphone jack.

But why is the Tecsun PL-660 so expensive? After all, cheaper counterparts also have the above functions. This is explained not only by a large number of received ranges, but also by double frequency conversion. The product has a very high sensitivity, while it competently cuts off interference from neighboring stations. In a word, this is an ideal in the world of portable radios!

Advantages

  • Compact dimensions;
  • Network operation is possible;
  • Up to 2000 radio stations can be stored in memory;
  • A large number of supported ranges;
  • High sensitivity;
  • Double frequency conversion works;
  • There is a timer.

Flaws

  • Very high cost.

Sangean PR-D14

Rating: 4.8

  Sangean PR-D14

Another not the cheapest radio, but with a more unsightly appearance. It also has a digital display, complemented by a yellow backlight. It displays information about the level of signal reception, battery status, current band and frequency, as well as some other parameters. The receiver differs from the instance considered above by a smaller number of buttons. To call your favorite radio stations, there are only five keys here, which will not appeal to everyone. However, the product and the number of supported ranges is less. In fact, this is just a radio receiver designed to listen to a signal in the FM and AM bands. There is also a USB-connector, allowing you to listen to music from a flash drive.

In general, the device is great for home use, but nothing more. Under such conditions, it will operate from the included AC adapter. Also, the device can be taken outside the house – for example, to a personal plot (AA batteries are required). Of the curious features of the radio, we can note the presence of an AUX input, which allows you to use this model as a speaker. There is also a headphone output. And the creators have introduced a sleep timer, which is never superfluous.

Advantages

  • Built-in clock controlled by RDS signal;
  • The display shows a large amount of information;
  • Network operation is possible;
  • There is an AUX connector;
  • There is a timer;
  • Clock synchronization via RDS;
  • There is a function to play MP3 from a USB drive;
  • Compact dimensions.

Flaws

  • Not the largest number of supported ranges;
  • Sensitivity cannot be called high;
  • Not the largest number of frequencies is stored in memory;
  • The price reaches 6 thousand rubles.

Bosch GML Soundboxx

Rating: 4.7

Bosch GML Soundboxx

The German conglomerate Bosch is known for a variety of techniques. Someone – on the electronics hiding under the hood of the car. Others – for refrigerators and other household appliances. The third – on power tools. And it is for the latter that the Bosch GML Soundboxx radio is designed. If you look at his photo, you will immediately notice that the device is made in the style of some kind of screwdriver or jigsaw. Here, too, a very durable plastic case is used, which can not be damaged even by a fall from a great height. And it has the same color. Moreover, the radio is powered by the same batteries that are used in a variety of Bosch tools – 14.4 V or 18 V. If this option does not suit you, you can use the supplied AC adapter.

This model is ready to voice even a fairly large apartment. For this, thanks to the stereo speakers with a total power of 10 watts. There are handles on their sides. They are used not only for transporting the device, but also as a stand. In the center of the radio receiver there is a display, supplemented by a backlight. It displays the current time, the frequency of the selected radio station and the battery level.

It is impossible not to pay attention to how big the main buttons are here. Not for nothing! The radio receiver was created for builders, finishers and people working in related professions. During work, their hands may be in gloves or even mittens. The buttons are designed to be easy to press in any conditions. However, not all. On the top panel there are secondary buttons that you will use much less often – they are much smaller.

A device called Bosch GML Soundboxx is not limited to receiving radio signals. A 3.5 mm audio input is located on its body, with the help of which sound is received from a smartphone or from some other equipment. With 5-watt speakers, this can be quite useful.

Other features and sound quality were best commented on by from authorized visitors of “Yandex.Market”who has been using the Bosch GML Soundboxx for several months: “It’s nice to be able to adjust the treble and bass. At full volume, it does not rattle … The sound is clear!.

Advantages

  • FM and MW bands are supported;

  • Good volume reserve;

  • There is an AUX socket;

  • There are buttons for individual radio stations;

  • Long battery life;

  • Can be carried in a branded case;

  • Supports batteries from power tools;

  • A shockproof case is used.

Flaws

  • Missing Bluetooth;

  • No USB input.

Tecsun PL-398MP

Rating: 4.7

Tecsun PL-398MP

A rare portable radio receives at its disposal two speakers at once. However, exceptions to the rule still happen, a good example of which is the Tecsun PL-398MP that got into our rating. This device incorporates a chip from the American company Silicon Labs, which can digitize the signal received in the FM, SW, LW and MW bands. Modern processing algorithms lead to a significant improvement in sensitivity. There is also a competent detuning from radio interference.

Like the previous reviewed model, this device can be used as a portable speaker, capturing sound from another device via the line-in. Also a nice addition will be an alarm clock that allows you to wake up to your favorite radio station. Well, a very rare guest is a thermometer that displays readings in both Fahrenheit and Celsius. A tribute to modern fashion can be considered a slot for an SD card from which MP3 songs will be played. Drives up to 8 GB are supported. Also on the case you can find a connector for an external antenna and a headphone output.

It should be noted that this device also has a digital display. But it does not display the largest amount of information – in particular, it will not work with its help to find out about the level of signal reception. The radio is powered both from the network and from three AA batteries, which, by the way, last for a very long time. In a word, for 4 thousand rubles. this is the best offer!

Advantages

  • Not the largest sizes;
  • Supports a decent number of ranges;
  • It is possible to install a memory card;
  • Built-in alarm clock and thermometer;
  • Can work from the mains;
  • There are two speakers;
  • There is a line input;
  • High sensitivity;
  • There is a cover included.

Flaws

  • Not the most convenient MP3 player control;
  • There is no alarm volume control.

Panasonic RF-3500

Rating: 4.6

  Panasonic RF-3500

A fairly large radio that even has a retractable handle. It was made, one might say, in the style of similar devices of the early 2000s. In order to reduce the cost, the Japanese decided to abandon all electronics, supplying their creation with an analog frequency control knob. Because of this, you will have to forget about the instant transition to a particular radio station. But on the other hand, such a receiver can serve not even years, but decades!

Like many models reviewed in this rating, Panasonic RF-3500 has one speaker. Its diameter is 10 cm, which is enough to produce a sound of high volume. Despite its simplicity, the radio is able to please with four bands – FM, LW, SW and MW. The device is powered by both mains and batteries. However, in the second case, the buyer is in for a surprise – it requires type C batteries.

In general, this is a simple radio receiver, sold for 3 thousand rubles. just because of the brand markup. There is not even a slot for a memory card and a USB connector, although they have already become a familiar attribute for portable electronics designed to play music. According to Expertology, this is a good choice for giving, but nothing more.

Advantages

  • Network operation is possible;
  • Built-in power supply;
  • A large number of ranges;
  • Long service life;
  • Sufficiently loud speaker;
  • Widespread in Russian stores.

Flaws

  • Not very high sensitivity;
  • Analog tuning of frequencies and volume will not suit everyone;
  • Minimum functionality.

The best fixed radios

Sangean WR-12

Rating: 4.9

Sangean WR-12

If there is still a radiogram in your parents’ house or somewhere in the country, then it’s time to replace it with the Sangean WR-12. This is a stationary radio, made in retro style. However, under the wooden case, modern components are hidden here, thanks to which the product sounds almost perfect. In particular, there are not only two speakers, but also a subwoofer. The bass sounds like it should! Actually, it is precisely because of the low-frequency speaker that the dimensions of the device turned out to be so impressive.

It should be noted that the product is analog. That is, a familiar wheel is used here to adjust the wave. This allows even grandparents to deal with the radio. Interestingly, the aforementioned bass is also subject to adjustment here. Fans of modern technology here should be pleased with the AUX input, thanks to which a smartphone or tablet can be connected to the device. There is also a connector for an external antenna, which is only needed somewhere in the village.

Such a device is powered strictly from the mains. Perhaps its main problem is the cost – not everyone dares to pay about 15 thousand rubles for a radio that operates in only two bands. Against this background, the absence of a USB port and an SD card slot, which would allow the device to independently play music from external drives, is especially upsetting.

Advantages

  • Natural wooden case;
  • Elderly people will like analog control;
  • The total power of acoustics reaches 16 W;
  • Built-in subwoofer;
  • High and low frequencies can be adjusted;
  • Durable construction;
  • There is an AUX input and a headphone output.

Flaws

  • Very high cost;
  • No support for playing music from a memory card or flash drive;
  • The radio only works on the FM and AM/MW bands.

Panasonic RF-800UEE-K

Rating: 4.8

  Panasonic RF-800UEE-K

An excellent radio receiver that has received a place in our rating due to the competent combination of modern and retro styles. This instance has only one speaker, but the device turned out to be relatively compact. Nothing prevents you from taking it to the country, and then taking it back, even if you do not have your own car. But, of course, you can’t put such a device in your pocket. You can also be pleased with the work in three bands – FM, SW and MW are supported. However, you will have to manually adjust the desired wave every time, since analog technology is used here.

Interestingly, the Japanese still did not forget about modern electronics. The fact is that the product is endowed with a USB port. It is used both for charging other devices and for listening to music stored on a flash drive. The radio itself is mainly powered by the mains. But if the situation requires it, you can install four D-type batteries under the back cover, forcing the device to play somewhere on the street. In a word, this is a very good option for those who are willing to spend 5 thousand rubles.

Advantages

  • The power of the built-in speaker reaches 2.5 W;
  • Receives radio in three bands;
  • Playback of music from a USB drive is possible;
  • Battery operation available;
  • Convenient MP3 player control;
  • The body was made from MDF.

Flaws

  • Weight reaches a decent 1.33 kg;
  • No connector for external antenna;
  • Analog radio control will not appeal to everyone.

Ritmix RPR-050

Rating: 4.7

  Ritmix RPR-050

A very interesting radio receiver, made in the style of American devices of this type, which were popular in the middle of the last century. Here, too, analog volume control and radio wave selection are used. The device operates in three bands – FM, AM and SW, which is extremely atypical for products under this brand. Also, the manufacturer decided to add something new here. As a result, the radio is able to boast … a powerful flashlight! Its LED is located on the side. Perhaps a flashlight is quite capable of coming in handy when the electricity suddenly turned off in the country.

Another unique feature of the device is its operation. The fact is that this radio can function both from the built-in battery and from two D-type batteries, if the charge of the first one has come to an end. The ability to connect a network adapter is not forgotten either – this option is most relevant indoors. Another undoubted advantage of this model is the AUX input, which allows you to use the radio as a portable speaker. Finally, the manufacturer added here the function of reading MP3 music from a memory card or USB flash drive.

There is this radio in two colors – copper and cherry. You can buy the product for only 1790 rubles. Such a low price is explained by the minimum dimensions of the device – you should not expect a loud and detailed sound from it.

Advantages

  • Cute retro design;
  • There is an AUX input and a headphone jack;
  • The radio operates on three bands;
  • There is a built-in battery;
  • Installation of batteries and connection of the network adapter are possible;
  • Available to read MP3 files from external drives;
  • A fairly powerful flashlight is built in;
  • Low price.

Flaws

  • The case was created from ordinary plastic;
  • The analog setting will not appeal to everyone;
  • The sound quality is far from ideal.

BZRP RP-324

Rating: 4.6

BZRP RP-324

This is a very large radio receiver, the body of which is made with stylized wood. At the same time, the dimensions of the device did not affect its functionality. The owner of this model will not be limited to receiving radio stations. BZRP RP-324 can easily be placed somewhere in the village, to which radio waves practically do not reach. In this case, the connectors from the top panel will come to the rescue. The first is used to receive sound from other equipment – for example, from a smartphone (this is a 3.5 mm audio input). The second serves as a slot for a microSD memory card containing music. Also, audio tracks can be downloaded to a USB flash drive – the third connector is intended for its connection.

A radio equipped with such an electronic component could receive an auto frequency search. However, its creators decided to achieve a retro look. As a result, the adjustment is carried out exclusively by turning the corresponding knob. At the same time, not only the FM band is available to the user, but also three others. To switch between them, again, a mechanical switch is used. It also allows you to activate the MP3 music playback function. And to the left of it is the volume control.

It may seem that the device does not have any buttons at all. But no. They should be looked for next to the connectors. They serve mainly to control MP3 playback. There is also a micro-USB socket, to which the power supply is connected. If the mains operation option does not suit you, you can use two R20 batteries.

We believe that the BZRP RP-324 is still far from ideal. And not because of the lack of an alarm clock here. First, it is impossible not to note the presence of only one speaker. This means that only mono sound awaits you. Secondly, the manufacturer did not endow his creation with a headphone jack. However, these are all minor things that can be forgiven. Especially after looking at the price – BZRP RP-324 is much cheaper than its more advanced competitors. And it’s prettier, to be honest… This is confirmed by one of the reviews posted in the DNS online store: “In my opinion, the main advantage of this receiver is the design, which is quite high quality and practical. The presence of inputs for different types of flash drives, as well as the ability to work on batteries, nicely complement the piggy bank with the advantages of this device!

Advantages

  • There is an AUX socket;

  • You can connect a USB flash drive;

  • There is a slot for a memory card;

  • Nice appearance;

  • The analog setting is used;

  • Sufficiently loud sound;

  • Can be powered by two batteries, and not just from the mains;

  • Low cost.

Flaws

  • Built-in only one speaker;

  • There is no way to connect headphones.

The best radio alarm clocks

Sangean WR-2

Rating: 4.9

Sangean WR-2

Many modern radios have a plastic case. Sometimes it is stylized as a tree, but to the touch it is still the same plastic. Fortunately, there are exceptions to the rule. Such is the Sangean WR-2 – it uses a full-fledged wooden frame, albeit not very thick. This must be why this model is in demand in many countries – in the USA, Brazil, China, Canada and many others.

The main advantages of the device are well described by a certain buyer of the Amazon online store. Here is a rough translation of the beginning of his review, left back in 2015: “This is a solid radio (about the size of a small shoebox) that we bought for our kitchen. Used every day. The sound quality is exquisite and exceptional compared to any other radio we’ve ever had.” And the user is right about the dimensions. He should also add that the weight of the receiver reaches 2.5 kg. It is thanks to him that the device does not budge at the moment when you press its buttons. Of which there are many. It was this plus that was singled out by Testberichte.de, a German resource that reviews various home appliances.

The sound quality is not particularly satisfactory. Of course, I would like to have two speakers here in order to enjoy full stereo. But even the maximum possible is squeezed out of the inside of the radio receiver. By the way, the device turned out to be very loud – the sound power is 7 watts.

The Sangean WR-2 operates on the FM and MW bands. The search for operating frequencies is carried out automatically. Only the volume control is offered to be rotated manually here. I am glad that the frequencies of five stations can be hung on the corresponding buttons M1-M5. It also allows you to set an alarm clock. And its display shows not only the time and the current frequency of the radio station. The device received support for RDS, so the name of the song and all kinds of advertising information may appear on the screen.

This model is very expensive. And all from its appearance and sound quality. Influenced the price tag and the remote control, which not all radios are equipped with. In terms of functionality, the Sangean WR-2, it seems to us, is much inferior to many competitors. Alas, the device does not support MP3 playback from certain drives. It doesn’t even have an AUX jack! But don’t forget the headphone jack. In a word, this model was created for those who choose a radio for their interior, and also want to enjoy bass sound.

Advantages

  • The radio turned out to be weighty;

  • The body is made of wood;

  • There is a large display;

  • Can be used as a radio alarm;

  • Excellent sound quality;

  • Works with FM and MW frequencies;

  • Complete with remote control;

  • High sound power;

  • There is a headphone jack.

Flaws

  • No ability to play MP3;

  • No 3.5mm audio input;

  • Very high cost.

Philips AJ3200

Rating: 4.8

  Philips AJ3200

For quite a long time in stores you can find a variety of radio alarm clocks under the Philips brand. Our rating included a model under the index AJ 3200. This is the simplest device that can receive radio waves only in the FM band. The device can remember only 10 frequencies. However, this is enough for most users. I am glad that the analog frequency setting is not used here, which is easy to knock down. The radio is powered by electricity. But if the electricity is suddenly turned off, nothing terrible will happen, since the product has a compartment for two AA batteries.

The radio alarm clock, sold for 2000 rubles, can play the role of a charger. For this, there are connectors for both Android-based smartphones and Apple products. As for the functionality of the alarm clock, it is also slightly expanded here. But much more important is the fact that there is also a sleep timer here.

Advantages

  • Digital frequency setting;
  • Minimum dimensions and weight;
  • There is a fairly advanced alarm clock;
  • There is a sleep timer (the maximum value is 2 hours);
  • Can be powered by two AA batteries;
  • Can be used as a charger;
  • Optimal price tag.

Flaws

  • FM band only;
  • There is no auto search for radio stations;
  • Minimum amount of memory;
  • There is no option to turn off the backlight.

Beurer WL90

Rating: 4.7

  Beurer WL90

Must be one of the most expensive radio alarm clocks. Its cost in Russia reaches 10 thousand rubles. Why are they asking for so much money?

The thing is, it’s not really a radio. And not exactly an alarm clock. In fact, the device combines four devices in one. It is simultaneously a color-changing lamp, a music station, a light alarm clock and a reading lamp. You can operate the device either using the buttons present or via the Beurer LightUp app on your smartphone. Synchronization is carried out via Bluetooth. The same technology can also be used to transmit sound from a smartphone or tablet. And the alarm clock radio will sound noticeably better than a portable device, because two 3 W speakers are installed here. You can also connect your phone via a USB cable, which allows the Beurer WL90 to play the role of a charger.

Of course, the radio is a secondary function of this device. Only 10 radio stations are stored here, and reception is carried out only in the FM band. Still, the manufacturer places more emphasis on the light component. The device allows you to adjust not only the brightness of the lamp, but also a similar parameter on the display. Also, special functions have been introduced here for falling asleep under a gradually fading light that simulates a sunset. In winter, awakening under the increasing brightness of the light will also be relevant. In a word, this is the best radio alarm clock. But not everyone dares to give such a huge amount of money for this device.

Advantages

  • The total sound power reaches 6 W;
  • Lots of lighting effects;
  • Can be used as a reading lamp;
  • There is a connector for charging gadgets;
  • Sound reception via Bluetooth is possible;
  • Smart alarm;
  • Convenient control via mobile application.

Flaws

  • The memory contains only 10 radio stations;
  • FM band only;
  • Very high cost.

The best pocket radio

Tecsun Q-3

Rating: 4.7

  Tecsun Q-3

Our rating must include at least one radio that fits freely in your pocket. Tecsun Q-3 acts as such a compact device. This device, as you might guess, is intended only for listening to the FM band. It has a digital frequency setting. You can call up your favorite radio station almost instantly by pressing the corresponding button. But the main feature of the gadget is the support for recording broadcasts on a memory card. You can also use a removable drive to play MP3 music. You can also connect a USB flash drive here, which is no less convenient.

Despite its small size (the width of the device is only 10 cm), the radio received a very good speaker – its power reaches 3 watts. It makes sense to use the device as a portable speaker – this is hinted at by the line input present here. In a word, the device sounds good. And here it looks – so-so. At least the signatures of some keys in Chinese characters can confuse. But most disappointing is the lack of mains power here. However, this radio is intended more for outdoor use than for home use.

Advantages

  • There is a headphone jack and an AUX input;
  • Sufficiently powerful speaker;
  • Minimum dimensions;
  • Music can be played from a USB flash drive and an SD card;
  • There are watches;
  • Radio recording is possible.

Flaws

  • Only one range;
  • Battery powered only;
  • There are inscriptions in Chinese.

Conclusion

Modern radios are both simpler and more complex than their counterparts from the past decade at the same time. Many models, as you may have noticed, can not only catch the radio. At the same time, it is much easier to use them, since manufacturers have tried to abandon all sorts of analog “twists” – the frequencies of specific radio stations are now most often recorded in memory. Nevertheless, our rating also includes models with analog control – their production has by no means been discontinued. In a word, we tried to tell as much as possible about the best radios, but now you need to decide on the purpose of the device and the amount that you are willing to spend on the purchase.
