The Best SLR Cameras for Beginners

First, let’s get acquainted with a selection of the most inexpensive DSLRs. And it will even be whales, that is, sets of a “carcass” and a lens. The best option for those who are taking their first steps in photography.

Canon EOS 1100D Kit

Rating: 4.4

Canon EOS 1100D Kit

The review will open with a Canon EOS 1100D camera with a lens included. This is the most inexpensive solution on the market, which can be confidently recommended to beginners. In August 2021, the kit costs a little more than 13 thousand rubles in Russian online markets.

The EOS 1100D is a continuation of the series, the previous generation of which was the EOS 1000D. According to many marketers, releasing this super-budget series, Canon is thus trying to “transplant” the owners of inexpensive “soap dishes” directly to SLR cameras and divert direct competitors from mirrorless production. Judging by the volume of feedback and numerous reviews, Canon’s efforts have been quite successful.

So, the main characteristics, properties and opportunities that the company offers for such modest money. First of all, the matrix is an APS-C format CMOS matrix, that is, “truncated”, 22.2×14.7 mm in size with a crop factor of 1.62 and a resolution of 4272×2848. Light sensitivity – up to 6400 ISO. Updated 9-point phase-detection autofocus and plus contrast autofocus for Live View.

A notable detail is the built-in iFCL exposure meter, which this device inherited from the older non-full-frame model EOS 7D. Compared to the previous generation, control has been significantly improved, very informative interactive tips have appeared – what a beginner needs.

A few words about the whale lens. Most often, the Canon EOS 1100D is equipped with a Canon EF-S 18-55mm f / 3.5-5.6 IS II lens, but some batches were released with a simplified version of the lens without the “IS II” marking, which means without image stabilization. Experts recommend that beginners still buy the IS II version with stabilization.

This model is one of the best-selling in Russia in this price category, and it also features more than impressive feedback from users on the largest Runet trading platforms. The vast majority of the reviews are positive, users mostly point out surprisingly high-quality shooting results, including in dynamics, in general, more than decent performance at an incredibly affordable price. There are comments about noise at high ISOs, but often their objectivity is doubtful, and other users also often refute such comments. Much more revealing are systematic comments about the lack of a matrix cleaning function – this is what users most often miss.

From the review of a Yandex.Market user with the status “Gadget Inspector Level 2”: “Kenon keeps its brand. An entry-level DSLR is even nothing. Even at 6400, the result is quite acceptable, especially since the software and raw allow you to work wonders.”

Advantages

  • convenient management;

  • built-in exposure meter from older models;

  • high-quality phase and contrast autofocus;

  • relatively fast continuous shooting in RAW;

  • useful interactive tips;

  • support for various types of memory cards, including Eye-Fi;

  • the most affordable price even in the budget category.

Flaws

  • a noticeable percentage of complaints about the matrix cleaning functions.

Nikon D3100 Kit

Rating: 4.5

Nikon D3100 Kit

The review will continue with Canon’s most obvious and closest competitor – the Nikon trademark and the budget D3100 SLR camera. This is also a kit (Kit), which includes a lens. This model costs in Russia in the middle of 2021 only slightly more expensive than the previous version – about 14 thousand rubles.

As in the case of the previous model, depending on the batch, the kit may contain different lenses. The most common is Nikkor 18-55mm F3.5-5.6VR. In any case, this is a secondary issue, as for a complete beginner. Still, the “carcass” is much more important, and more about it.

Let’s start with the “heart” of any digital camera – the matrix. Here we see a reduced APS-C format matrix measuring 23.0×15.5 mm with a crop factor of 1.5. The maximum resolution is 4608×3072 pixels, which corresponds to 14.2 megapixels. Those who are intimately familiar with digital photography will notice that this is a very impressive figure, even when compared with much more expensive devices. However, in fairness, it is worth recognizing that although there is practical potential in such a resolution, there is still more marketing.

Light sensitivity – up to 3200 ISO, in extended mode up to ISO6400 and even up to ISO12800. Here, too, you need to understand that the honest sensitivity limit is still 3200 ISO, and everything above is software cheating. But, again, this is an established practice among manufacturers, and it will be quite useful for beginners to gain such experience. It is much more important here that at the maximum honest ISO the camera gives very minimal noise, unlike many other inexpensive models that are pretty noisy at high ISOs.

Another point that may be important just for beginners. A special GUIDE mode is programmed in the camera electronics, which is designed to help a beginner understand the controls, suggest the right actions in ambiguous places, etc.

This camera is almost a record holder for high ratings in user reviews. And, characteristically, many responses are in the nature of a pleasant surprise, when the buyer receives much more than expected for very modest money. And this is not only the delight of beginners who switched from soap dishes to an inexpensive, but DSLR. Many experts are in full solidarity with users that this model in terms of quality, features and functionality significantly exceeds its market value, and this is surprising.

From the review of a Yandex.Market user with the status “Level 2 Gadget Inspector”: “An excellent camera for the money. I chose for a long time, looked at more expensive models, but why would a beginner need them. The quality of photographs is significantly different from soap dishes, while more is not needed. ”

Advantages

  • high resolution matrix at the level of professional models;

  • ceteris paribus, the minimum noise in its class at high ISO;

  • quality of night shooting;

  • simple and clear control;

  • easy and predictable in operation;

  • GUIDE learning mode with informative tips;

  • tenacious and accurate autofocus;

  • does not blur the edges;

  • the battery charges quickly.

Flaws

  • a buzzing sound is heard when shooting video in automatic mode.

Nikon D5100 Kit

Rating: 4.6

Nikon D5100 Kit

For those beginners in photography who are willing to pay a couple of thousand rubles and get a more advanced device, there is a worthy solution of the same series as the previous model. This is the Nikon D5100 Kit – also a kit with a rather simple, but decent lens and a more advanced camera. It costs about 17 thousand rubles in Russian retail in the summer of 2021.

Let’s start with the most important element in any digital camera – the matrix. It was developed by Sony, based on the matrix for the Nikon D7000 model, which is able to provide an image with the most accurate color reproduction, minimal noise at high ISOs and a wide dynamic range. All these important points were inherited by the matrix for Nikon D5100. Let’s consider it in a little more detail.

Here we also have a “cropped” CMOS sensor with a crop factor of 1.5, which is 2.25 times smaller than full-frame sensors. The format is the same – APS-C with dimensions of 23.6×15.6 mm. The resolution is even higher than that of the previous model – 4928×3264 pixels, a total of 16.2 million effective pixels. Maximum light sensitivity is 6400 ISO, software algorithms add artificial ISO12800 and ISO25600 modes.

At such a price, it would be naive to expect the presence of matrix stabilization, and this model really does not have it. But on the other hand, the matrix cleaning function has finally been implemented here, which definitely pleases even beginners.

Now about other important points that buyers systematically indicate and list in reviews of this camera. Lots of positive feedback about the 3-inch 921,000-dot swivel LCD that can be used as a viewfinder.

A very good burst shooting speed is 4 frames per second, which is almost equal to the much more advanced Nikon D90 model with its 4.5 frames per second. Shooting in RAW format is well developed in terms of image quality. So, the color depth here is as much as 14 bits, and the D5100 is the first camera from Nikon with this parameter.

And one more thing that newcomers rarely indicate in reviews, taking it for granted. We are talking about very good electronics and a fairly powerful EXPEED-2 processor that controls all processes. Due to its efficiency, the camera interface and most of the functionality work very quickly. For beginners who have this first SLR camera, there is simply nothing to compare with, but in fact this is a really serious advantage of the model.

Advantages

  • a high resolution;

  • image quality close to professional devices;

  • there is a matrix cleaning function;

  • convenient swivel screen;

  • 14-bit color depth in RAW;

  • powerful electronics based on the fast EXPEED-2 processor;

  • high speed in general;

  • HDR function (JPEG only).

Flaws

  • objective flaws against the background of the price were not revealed.

The best amateur SLR cameras

The second selection will be more like an addition to the first, since the difference between a camera for beginners and amateurs is very unsteady. In the previous nomination, we reviewed models recommended by experts as the very first DSLR. Here we will present the best options a little more expensive and more interesting, which will suit those who are already a little versed in DSLRs.

Nikon D3300 Kit

Rating: 4.5

Nikon D3300 Kit

The nomination will be opened by the device, which, as it were, continues the series of the above-described Nikon budget models with complete lenses. The difference is that in terms of the most important parameters, this model is noticeably better than all the previous ones. It costs about 20 thousand rubles in the online trading platforms of Runet in the summer of 2021.

First, let’s point out a secondary parameter, since it was he who received the most frequent positive ratings in customer reviews. We are talking about dimensions and weight – 124x98x76 mm and 410 g without lens and battery. And if in size it is only slightly smaller than the Nikon D5100 Kit described above, then it is lighter by as much as 100 g, and with a serious workload, this is very noticeable.

Now let’s move on to the main thing. The device is equipped with an APS-C CMOS-matrix with a crop factor of 1.5 and dimensions of 23.5×15.6 mm. This sensor is no different from the above. But as for the resolution, here we see 24 megapixels, unthinkable for such a class. On the one hand, it would seem that there are no extra megapixels. But on the other hand, RAW files are gigantic, while the advantages compared to a resolution of 16 or even 12 megapixels are very insignificant. Nevertheless, we count this moment as a virtue.

In user reviews, there is a noticeable percentage of those who especially praise the whale lens. Most often, this model is equipped with a universal Nikon 18-55mm 1: 3.5-5.6GII VR II AF-S DX Nikkor lens, and it is really more than enough for 99% of the tasks of an amateur photographer, and he copes with them really well.

This device surpasses the previous ones in color depth – 36 bits, burst speed – 5 frames per second. Also here we see increased performance in terms of video recording. The device can shoot videos up to 20 minutes in FullHD resolution 1920 × 1080 at 50/60 fps.

In their reviews, users most often mention the exceptional quality of the resulting image (with a competent approach to shooting), simple and understandable controls, a rather small weight of the camera, and speed. In terms of speed, it’s really decent thanks to the powerful processor. The only exception is the Live View mode. Continuous shooting, if you shoot in RAW format, can also slow down due to the small buffer.

From the review of a Yandex.Market user with the status of “Level 2 Gadget Inspector”: “Remarkable in terms of ergonomics, a case for an initial DSLR. The best performance in its segment. Extensive fleet of lenses for Nikon, Sigma, Tamron, Zenith, etc.”

Advantages

  • compact and lightweight;

  • quality materials;

  • convenient control, Guide mode with hints;

  • high resolution (some think even too much);

  • high depth of color reproduction;

  • high-quality and functional whale lens;

  • continuous shooting speed;

  • shooting video with fps 60;

  • powerful processor ensures high speed.

Flaws

  • small burst buffer.

Nikon D3400 Kit

Rating: 4.6

Nikon D3400 Kit

According to Expertology magazine, the review of the best SLR cameras will continue with a model that is in many ways similar to the previous one and belongs to the same series, but is more perfect in a number of parameters and a couple of thousand more expensive.

The main advantage of this model is increased autonomy. It is achieved in the simplest way – due to the increased capacity of the 1200 mAh battery. It is this characteristic that users most often indicate in their reviews.

Otherwise, the characteristics are similar to the previous model, surpassing it in some moments. So, here we see the same “cropped” APS-C format CMOS matrix with dimensions of 23.5×15.6 mm with a high resolution of 24 megapixels. The same high color depth is 36-bit covering sRGB and Adobe RGB color spaces.

Another important difference between this model and the Nikon D3300 is the existing interfaces and flexibility of connections. So, the device can be connected to a computer via USB 2.0 or HDMI, and there is also a Bluetooth module and SnapBridge. Using wireless technology, the device can be connected to a wearable gadget on Android or iPhone. For some reason, the microphone input was removed in this version.

This model also retains some of the most noteworthy video features in its class. The device can shoot videos in FullHD resolution 1920 × 1080 at up to 60 fps. And the duration of one video has been increased to 29 minutes.

Like the previous model, it features a convenient 3-inch 921,000-dot swivel LCD screen. It is not touch-sensitive, and touch control will not work, but it can effectively perform the functions of a viewfinder. It has a field of view of 95%, which is very good, and in combination with the fast Expeed 4 processor, playback delays will be almost imperceptible.

Users in their reviews highly appreciate this camera, first of all, for a capacious battery that provides up to 1200 captured photos on a single charge. A lot of positive feedback about the availability of wireless communication modules. Criticisms concern mainly the inability to connect an external microphone due to the physical absence of the corresponding connector.

Advantages

  • a high resolution;

  • high color depth;

  • simple and convenient management;

  • powerful Expeed 4 processor;

  • Bluetooth and SnapBridge wireless connections;

  • increased battery life due to a more capacious battery.

Flaws

  • There is no input for an external microphone.

Canon EOS 650D Kit

Rating: 4.7

Canon EOS 650D Kit

Next in the selection is the product of Nikon’s direct competitor – the Canon EOS 650D Kit. As you can see from the prefix “Kit”, this is also a kit with a lens. You can find the “carcass” itself in retail, but it’s not easy. And from the point of view of a beginner, it makes sense to buy the Kit, since the complete lens is quite good. The device costs in the middle of 2021 in Russia about 24 thousand rubles.

A cursory glance at the main characteristics of the model may give the impression that the device is no better than the previous ones, and in some places even more modest. This is only partly so. In fact, the model still has advantages that compensate for the disadvantages. In addition, the brand itself matters to the fans.

It uses an APS-C format matrix measuring 22.3×14.9 mm with a resolution of 18 megapixels. And you need to understand that this is by no means a loss of positions compared to the models neighboring in the nomination with their 24 megapixels. It’s just that in this case we see a more honest approach, in which there is less of a marketing component.

In terms of continuous shooting, this camera is almost the same as the previous one – up to 5 frames per second. As for video, there is already a noticeable limitation here – the camera can shoot videos in resolutions up to FullHD 1920 × 1080, but with fps no higher than 30. However, this does not cause any particular complaints, since most users use the device for its intended purpose, and he is the best at photography.

The really noticeable, important and noteworthy innovation is not directly photography, but management. This refers to the swivel screen, which in this version received touch qualities.

For the most part, users respond extremely positively in the comments to this model on the Runet trading floors. They note the high quality of the image, which is very easy to achieve. A lot of positive comments about the touch screen, which greatly simplifies the operation. Critical remarks relate mainly to the fact that, with all the objective merits of whales, the lens is a little dark. There is also a small percentage of remarks regarding the not-too-smart autofocus in video mode.

From the review of a Yandex.Market user with the status “Gadget Inspector Level 2”: “Praise be to the touch screen. The algorithm for changing the parameters of photography is much simpler than with the buttons. Plus, the excellent quality of the SE and the nimble new processor make it a pleasure to view, enlarge, edit and selectively delete photos in i-style, with your fingers.

Advantages

  • the quality of the “picture” in different modes;

  • touch, rotary LCD display;

  • simple and clear control;

  • support for HDR mode;

  • comfortable grip;

  • saving pictures in JPEG and RAW at the same time.

Flaws

  • autofocus does not always cope with video shooting;

  • there are comments that the whale lens is somewhat dark.

Canon EOS 2000D Kit black EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 III

Rating: 4.7

Canon EOS 2000D Kit black EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 III

According to Expertology, the selection of the best amateur SLR cameras will be completed by a model manufactured by Canon, which is very close in terms of characteristics to the semi-professional level. This is already a very expensive device, as for the entry level – in Russian retail in 2021 it costs about 30 thousand rubles. But this is still more than an affordable price compared to the professional class of cameras.

The main feature of this model is advanced functionality. We see a fundamental difference in communications. So, for example, here, in addition to standard wired connections via USB and HDMI 2.0, there is also a Wi-Fi module and an NFC short-range wireless communication chip. And this is not the only advantage of the camera.

The matrix with its 24 megapixels deserves a high rating here. The matrix, quite expectedly, is not full-frame, but has a crop factor of 1.6, corresponding to the dimensions of 22.3×14.9 mm. The increased depth of recognition and reproduction of shades in 42 bits gives a realistic image.

Capabilities of the device in terms of video shooting are rather mediocre. It can shoot video at resolutions up to FullHD 1920×1080, but at this maximum resolution, the frequency will not exceed 30 fps. At low quality, the frequency can reach 60 fps.

Not quite noticeable details often indicate a high level of electronics and any technology in general. So here – such a nuance as smooth adjustment of diopters in the viewfinder is not particularly emphasized by distributors, but speaks of the manufacturer’s careful and responsible approach to the creation of this series of cameras.

User reviews for this model are mostly extremely positive. Buyers often consider the camera as their first DSLR and are usually not disappointed. They are praised for the quality of the resulting image, accessibility for beginners, ease of use and overall ergonomics. Separate thanks sound for the presence of wireless communication.

Criticisms concern a really noticeable drawback – some batches went on sale with a flaw – a missing central contact on the central “shoe” for a separate flash. This implies incompatibility with most third-party flashes and synchronizers. It is not known whether this was a miscalculation or a deliberate action, but the party was not withdrawn. And therefore, if this function matters to you, the presence of a central contact in the shoe should be specifically asked at the point of sale.

Advantages

  • a high resolution;

  • reliable color reproduction and image quality in general;

  • smooth diopter adjustment in the viewfinder;

  • two years official warranty

  • There are Wi-Fi and NFC modules.

Flaws

  • in some batches, the central contact in the “shoe” is missing.

The best semi-professional DSLRs

Let’s move on to the next category, in which we will consider a selection of cameras of a higher level. Conventionally, such models are called semi-professional for much higher performance, improved quality and rich functionality compared to amateur ones. In this mini-selection, we will look at two interesting models from Canon and Nikon, and already without whale lenses, since in the semi-professional field this is already “not comme il faut”.

Canon EOS 6D Black

Rating: 4.8

Canon EOS 6D Black

First, consider a relatively inexpensive semi-professional level camera manufactured by Canon. In terms of a number of key characteristics, it is head and shoulders above any of the above, but at the same time it is already quite tangible – about 50 thousand rubles as of the summer of 2021.

The first thing we will draw the attention of readers to is the matrix format. Here we are already dealing with a full frame, that is, a Full frame with a sensor size of 36×24 mm. And this means that according to the review, there will no longer be the limitations that are characteristic of “cropped” cameras. The physical sensitivity of the matrix is up to 3200 ISO, software algorithms extend the modes of artificially increased sensitivity from ISO51200 to ISO25600. The maximum resolution is 5472×3648 pixels. There is a cleaning function of the matrix.

The camera is characterized by an extended set of interfaces compared to amateur models. There are standard wired USB 2.0 and HDMI 2.0, as well as wireless Wi-Fi and IRDA, an additional video input and a microphone input. There is no wired headphone output, users connect an external microphone wirelessly.

This model is also positioned as a travel camera. A number of characteristics speak in favor of such specialization. This is a reinforced body and a strong frame made of magnesium alloy, moisture protection (basic, but still), the presence of a GPS module.

Users in their marketplace reviews highly rate this model as one of the most affordable “full frames” on the market, if you count the top brands. Often note the surprisingly accurate work of autofocus in low light conditions. There are a lot of positive reviews about autonomy, but they are followed by remarks that Wi-Fi and GPS wireless modules “sit down” the battery in the most dramatic way. Also, some users note that a device of this level would benefit from two memory card slots in order to avoid the loss of valuable frames due to possible failures.

From the review of a Yandex.Market user with the Level 3 Gadget Inspector status: “An excellent device for someone who understands what he needs it for. A great option for switching to FF from crop or even for a beginner who is ready to invest a lot of money on lenses.

Advantages

  • full frame;

  • a high resolution;

  • matrix cleaning function;

  • basic dust and moisture protection;

  • magnesium alloy frame;

  • Wi-Fi and GPS;

  • minimal noise at high ISO;

  • high-quality and accurate autofocus performance in low light;

  • the ability to manually adjust the focus.

Flaws

  • only one slot for memory cards;

  • minor flaws in the interface and management.

Nikon D610 Body

Rating: 4.9

Nikon D610 Body

The second and final semi-professional camera in the review from Expertology magazine is noticeably more expensive than the previous one, but in terms of characteristics it is noticeably better and more progressive. This is a fairly famous model D610 manufactured by Nikon. In mid-2021, the device costs about 70 thousand rubles in Russia. In its class, this price is considered quite affordable. The model was released in the already distant 2013, but is still in great demand.

This is also a full-frame with a 35.9×24 mm CMOS matrix and a high resolution of 24 megapixels (6016×4016 pixels). Impressive depth of recognition and reproduction of shades – 42 bits. Same light sensitivity characteristics as previous model.

Continuous shooting is better worked out in this camera – a speed of 6 frames per second, combined with autofocus that works well in dynamics. There is an electronic rangefinder, the ability to manually adjust the focus, the function of focusing on the face.

The set of interfaces is rather restrained, but there is everything you need for a mid-range photographer. USB 2.0 or HDMI ports are used for connection (you can shoot an uncompressed video stream from the HDMI output), there are also a headphone output and a microphone input, a remote control connector. An important point – there are already two slots for memory cards, which is extremely important when it comes to guaranteeing the preservation of especially valuable unique shots.

Separate kind words in this model deserves a viewfinder. Although some users claim that it is a bit dark, objectively its parameters are very worthy. This is an optical pentaprism element that provides 100% coverage of the frame, plus an increase of up to 0.7x – all this is quite “pulling” to the level of professional DSLRs.

Buyers in their reviews most often note the combination of price, quality and characteristics. Many regard this model as one of the cheapest full frames on the market. A noticeable percentage of high ratings for battery “survivability”, and indeed, the battery provides battery life, even exceeding (often significantly) the stated limit of 900 shots.

Criticisms from users are mostly unsystematic. The only thing that occurs quite often is an indication of the problem of dustiness of the matrix. Users notice that this problem was also in the previous generation, the Nikon D600. Even with the formally available matrix cleaning function, in the D610 it does not completely solve the problem.

Advantages

  • full frame;

  • a high resolution;

  • 42-bit color depth;

  • most of the parts are made of magnesium alloy;

  • the battery significantly exceeds the autonomy declared by the manufacturer;

  • two slots for memory cards.

Flaws

  • the problem of dust on the matrix.

The best SLR cameras for professionals

The final selection of the Expertology magazine’s review of the best SLR cameras is dedicated to the top professional-level cameras. Naturally, they are also the most expensive in the review, but we still selected the best of those that are still relatively affordable, taking the price of 200 thousand rubles as a conditional upper threshold.

Nikon D750 Body

Rating: 4.8

Nikon D750 Body

Let’s start the selection with a relatively inexpensive professional-grade camera manufactured by Nikon. This is the D750, a continuation of the legendary D700. It was a relatively inexpensive and functional reporting camera, after which the Nikon D810 came out. But the 810 did not suit everyone, and Nikon decided to create an intermediate version. So in 2014, the Nikon D750 appeared, meeting almost all expectations. In 2021, in the Russian Federation, it costs a little more than 100 thousand rubles.

The Nikon D750 is a full-frame reportage camera with a 24 megapixel (6016×4016) resolution sensor and 42-bit color depth. The maximum physical sensitivity is 3200 ISO, software algorithms give more artificial sensitivity modes from ISO51200 to ISO25600. There is a cleaning function of the matrix.

What else is important for reporter work is the characteristics of continuous shooting. Here the D750 is quite good with its 6.5 frames per second. At the time of release, the D750 was in fact (chronologically) newer than the 810, so it acquired some features that the more advanced model does not have. For example, an RGB metering sensor with 91k dots.

Autofocus deserves a separate analysis. Here the manufacturer has updated everything that is possible. A Multi-CAM 3500 II sensor is installed with increased sensitivity up to -3EV. This automatically implies increased accuracy. In total, 51 active points are involved in the autofocus system, 15 of them are cross points. In terms of the combination of characteristics, the autofocus of the D750 is even better than that of the formally more advanced D810 model. In fairness, it should be said that especially picky users note that the autofocus points are concentrated closer to the center of the frame, and this does not suit everyone. But these are just nitpicks, not a clear flaw.

What else will be important to many is that the device can shoot video in FullHD resolution 1920 × 1080 at a fairly comfortable frequency of 60 fps. The duration of one continuous video is 30 minutes.

The camera has a fairly standard set of interfaces – USB 2.0, HDMI, audio, microphone input and plus Wi-Fi. The MB-D16 battery, which is not bad in terms of capacity, provides 1230 photos declared by the manufacturer and even more under favorable shooting conditions.

From the review of a Yandex.Market user with the Level 2 Gadget Inspector status: “An excellent camera for its price, which can withstand the sometimes difficult working conditions of a correspondent. A huge plus is that a long period of warranty service and (very important) service cleaning.».

Advantages

  • full frame;

  • high resolution matrix;

  • convenient management;

  • swivel screen with viewfinder function;

  • advanced metering sensor;

  • high-precision autofocus;

  • good autonomy;

  • WiFi;

  • video recording in FullHD 1920 × 1080 at 60 fps.

Flaws

  • live view is slow.

Canon EOS 5D Mark IV Body

Rating: 4.8

Canon EOS 5D Mark IV Body

Next in our review is a professional camera made by Canon. This is another Mark, already the fourth, continuation of the famous series. In 2016, the fourth Mark was perhaps the most anticipated camera, and when it was finally introduced, it created an instant buzz. In 2021, in the Russian Federation, this model costs a little more than 180 thousand rubles, that is, almost twice as much as the previous one. But this is not an overprice at all – the characteristics of the device give the Nikon D750 a serious head start, as if these are devices of a different class.

Even if we compare neighboring models in the EOS 5D series, the Mark IV differs for the better from the Mark III more than tangibly. But let’s go in order and start with the matrix. It is, of course, full-frame, with a resolution of 30 megapixels, which is a lot even for a professional camera. And here the main thing is not even resolution, but the use of Dual Pixel CMOS AF technology. Highly accurate and efficient autofocus allows you to focus quickly, smoothly and correctly when shooting moving subjects, including in Live View mode.

A separate exposure sensor with a resolution of 150 thousand points comes to the aid of the phase module. Its data is used for more precise focusing through the viewfinder, as well as for face detection and tracking of moving subjects in accordance with EOS iTR AF technology. To process metering data, the camera even has a separate DIGIC 6 processor built in, in addition to the main DIGIC 6+ CPU.

Everything described is more about reportage shooting, because this model has such a conditional specialization. In addition to these characteristics, it is also worth noting the increased burst shooting speed – up to 7 frames per second, as well as exorbitant ISO values - up to 32000 ISO, and in advanced modes through software algorithms – up to ISO102400. The matrix cleaning function is available. The burst buffer is impressive – one burst in RAW mode is designed for 21 frames.

This model also has enhanced video capabilities. The device can shoot in FullHD resolution 1920×1080 with a comfortable fps of 60 frames per second, or in 1280×720 with fps 120 (potential reserve for Time Laps), and even in 4K resolution extended 4096×2160 with fps 30.

An extended set of interfaces is provided for connection. Even the seemingly standard USB port is high-speed version 3.0, there is also HDMI, Wi-Fi, NFC, a microphone input, a remote control jack.

Nikon D850 Body black

Rounds out Expertology magazine’s 2021 Best DSLR review Another model from Nikon. This is also a super popular camera, which is one of the newest and most expensive in the D-line. It came out in 2017, and in 2021 it costs about 200 thousand rubles in Russia.

Let’s start with the main thing, that is, with the matrix, especially since it is quite outstanding here. This is a full-frame back-illuminated CMOS sensor with a top resolution of 45.7 megapixels. The maximum image resolution is 8256×5504. There is a cleaning function of the matrix.

The continuous shooting speed here is even higher than that of the previous reportage model – 9 frames per second. When shooting, the device can save files not only in JPEG and RAW, but also in TIFF format. The shooting itself and operational control are extremely convenient thanks to the swivel 3-inch LCD screen, which is also tilted. In general, the control in this model is extremely flexible and well thought out, up to the possibility of reassigning functions to certain buttons. The buttons themselves are backlit, there is an additional miniature joystick.

The device is equipped with a wide range of interfaces: USB 2.0, HDMI, microphone input and headphone output, remote control jack, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth wireless modules. Recognizes SDHC, SD, SDXC, XQD memory cards. Video recording is possible in resolutions up to 4K 3840×2160 at 30 frames per second, and in FullHD resolution 1920×1080 – up to 60 fps.

This model also boasts extremely positive and often enthusiastic feedback from real buyers on the largest marketplaces. Users in the mass praise the device for impeccable detail, exceptional color accuracy, fast and accurate autofocus, ergonomics, flexibility and much more. Many categorize this model as the best professional camera in Nikon’s range.

Critical remarks, if we take only systematic ones, mainly concern only the functionality of wireless connections. It is not sufficiently developed, which makes wireless modules useless in many situations, and they “plant” the battery quite intensively. Nevertheless, the advantages of the camera have a crushing advantage over the disadvantages.

From the review of a Yandex.Market user with the Level 11 Gadget Inspector status: “Exceptional photo detail. Excellent, the best among Nikon cameras, color reproduction, including the reproduction of human skin tones. Autofocus is accurate and fast in all lighting conditions.”
