The best budget 55″ TVs

First of all, we will consider a selection of the most inexpensive 55-inch TVs. Despite the lowest possible cost in this segment, their characteristics are quite worthy, and some of them are worked out by manufacturers especially carefully.

Polarline 55PU11TC-SM 55″ (2019), black

Rating: 4.6

POLARLINE 55PU11TC-SM 55" (2019)

The first in the selection will be the cheapest 55-inch TV brand Polarline. Its affordable price – about 27 thousand rubles in mid-2021 – is explained by several points at once. The brand itself belongs to a Russian company, which fundamentally works strictly in the budget segment, and this model was released in 2019 and has since managed to become cheaper and pass the test of time.

One of the most notable features on this TV is its 4K 3840×2160 resolution. Although 4K in 2021 is no longer a luxury or a curiosity, but in the ultra-budget segment, this is still the basis for high praise. The manufacturer does not particularly emphasize the type of matrix, but due to the wide viewing angles of 178 degrees and frequent backlighting, even a non-specialist can understand that this is IPS. True, one of the inexpensive ones, judging by the not too high margin of brightness. Conscious users perceive these limitations and cases of flashing calmly – it would be strange to expect top-end flagship characteristics for such an assessment.

The second important point in this model is the presence of the SmartTV system. Such functionality is also not available in every mid-priced modern TV, not to mention budget ones. Tellingly, the system works surprisingly well, not lightning fast (affects the budget processor), but stable.

There is a wireless Wi-Fi module, but it only works in one 2.4GHz band, which is quite expected for this price category. FullHD 1920×1080 quality content can be watched wirelessly without any problems, but 4K 3840×2160 will already lag, and it’s better to use the wireless Ethernet interface (RJ-45) for it.

User feedback in the reviews on the largest trading platforms of Runet is somewhat ambiguous due to the inflated expectations of buyers. Those users who understand the inevitability of the technical gap between budget TVs and flagships appreciate this model at its true worth and mostly positively. They note decent image quality, the very fact of 4K resolution, the presence of Smart TV, wireless communication.

From the review of a Yandex.Market user with the status “Level 4 Gadget Inspector”: “For the money, everything suits. I took to watch 4K movies from an external hard drive. I also connected 300+ channels, I watch via wi-fi, a lot in HD quality, everything works fine without losing connection.”

Advantages

  • the most inexpensive 55-inch model;

  • tested by time and a large number of users;

  • resolution 4K 3840×2160;

  • the function of recording programs on an external USB drive;

  • there is SmartTV;

  • Wi-Fi and wired Ethernet (RJ-45);

  • TimeShift;

  • protection from children.

Flaws

  • lights come across;

  • the sound quality of the built-in speakers.

Quantum Dot KIVI 55U800BR 55″ (2020), titanium gray

Rating: 4.7

Quantum Dot KIVI 55U800BR 55

The review will continue with another budget TV brand KIVI, which belongs to an international corporation with roots, presumably from the CIS. Electronics and household appliances KIVI occupies a strictly budgetary market niche, due to which it is able to compete with eminent technological giants in the CIS and Asian markets. This model costs about 35 thousand rubles in Russia in 2021, but the price can vary greatly at different points of sale.

The main advantage of this TV can be seen already from the name of the model, where the manufacturer put in the first place not even a trademark, but a much more well-known wording all over the world – Quantum Dot. Here the manufacturer is clearly cunning, since such an advanced technology would seriously add to the price of the TV. This is just a non-binding marketing ploy.

If not QLED, then what is the matrix here? Pretty good SVA with viewing angles at the level of IPS – 178 degrees. Brightness and contrast are increased here – 400 nits and 8000: 1, respectively. These are more than good indicators, and users in reviews often emphasize this characteristic as a tangible advantage. In addition, it uses technology to improve the smoothness and clarity of a moving image with an index of dynamic scenes of 800 units.

As in the previous budget model, there is a SmartTV system, but here it is better designed, more functional and generally gets more positive feedback from specialists and ordinary users. The speed of the interface is significantly higher, although not lightning fast – the Cortex-A55 processor is better than that of the Polarline 55PU11TC-SM, but still far from the most powerful.

The set of interfaces is more complete than the previous model – here, in addition to Wi-Fi, there is also Bluetooth and some additional ports. The built-in acoustics are more powerful – two 12W speakers.

Advantages

  • good matrix with wide viewing angles;

  • resolution 4K 3840×2160;

  • a large margin of brightness;

  • almost exceptionally high contrast;

  • smart TV;

  • relatively powerful speakers;

  • Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Ethernet (RJ-45);

  • 16GB built-in storage;

  • voice control;

  • 3 years official manufacturer’s warranty.

Flaws

  • “slows down” the SmartTV interface.

LG 55UN70006LA 55″ (2020), black

Rating: 4.8

LG 55UN70006LA 55

The selection of the most inexpensive 55-inch TVs will be completed by the model of the already truly eminent brand LG, which has a whole bunch of bright innovations, sometimes even revolutionary ones. This model is already almost beyond the conventional budget segment, but still, compared to the rest of the market, it is considered quite affordable. In the summer of 2021, it costs about 40 thousand rubles in the Russian Federation. Hereinafter, the price of a TV needs to be specified in different stores, since the difference in retail price from batch to batch can be significant.

The first thing this model compares favorably with the previous two is the matrix. Here it is IPS with characteristic maximum viewing angles of 178 degrees. Experts and users note impressively expressive color reproduction, which means that the matrix is far from the cheapest. Factory calibration can be flawed, and after manual fine-tuning, the color reproduction capabilities are fully revealed. The problem of backlighting, characteristic of many IPS matrices, is present here, but not all users pay attention to them. If you are sensitive to this phenomenon, the TV should be bought with a preliminary check.

There is another feature in this TV that will definitely attract gamers. This is a special ALLM game mode. Its essence is the mobilization of electronics resources to ensure a minimum input lag. And in this regard, the model really shows impressive efficiency. The transition to the game mode can occur by manual switching or automatically. For automatic mode, you need to enable Instant Game Response in the menu.

This model has more than enough connection interfaces – three HDMI ports (one with an ARC audio return channel), two USB ports, Wi-Fi wireless modules and high-speed Bluetooth 5.0, Airplay support, etc.

From the review of a Yandex.Market user with the Level 3 Gadget Inspector status: “Bright and juicy colors, a clear picture, especially in 4K, good sound, a simple remote control. Cope with your task with a bang. I recommend. And whoever writes about backlighting at the corners of the screen, check when buying!

Advantages

  • eminent manufacturer;

  • good IPS matrix;

  • good color rendering;

  • HDR10 support;

  • SmartTV;

  • Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Ethernet (RJ-45) and Airplay support;

  • there is an ALLM game mode with minimal input lag;

  • voice control, works with Alice.

Flaws

  • There are highlights along the edges of the matrix.

The best mid-range 55-inch TVs

In the second selection, we will consider TVs with screens of 55 inches diagonally, no longer limited to the minimum price ceiling. Here we have taken into account exclusively the production models of the market leaders. Our experts recognized the proposals from Xiaomi, Samsung and LG as optimal in terms of price, functionality and quality.

Xiaomi Mi TV 4A 55 T2 55″ (2020), black

Rating: 4.7

Xiaomi Mi TV 4A 55 T2 55

Chinese tech giant Xiaomi has long been associated with more than just budget electronics. Here is just such a case – the presented TV entered the market in the past 2020 and belongs to the conditional middle class. At Russian points of sale in 2021, it costs about 43 thousand rubles. The price varies greatly, depending on the region of the Russian Federation and the specific store.

Xiaomi has a feature that can be annoying, and rightfully so. These are confusing model names that closely echo neighboring lines. Or vice versa, the presence of “synonyms” of the same model, which can be misleading. Here we are talking about the Mi TV 4A TV with the T2 index. Sometimes there is confusion with the Mi TV 4S model, which is more advanced and expensive.

Now to the crux of the issue. This TV is equipped with a not too expensive, but far from the simplest matrix. Viewing angles are the widest possible – 78%. Users and experts note good color reproduction and visual perception of the “picture” as a whole. The margin of brightness is slightly above the average – 300 nits, and the contrast ratio gives a serious head start to any IPS matrix – 4500: 1. Resolution – 4K 3840×2160.

In this segment, it is logical to expect “smart” functionality from a modern TV. So it is – this model has a built-in SmartTV system based on Android TV. Control is via remote control or voice via Google Assistant. The remote control and connection to the TV are made quite well. The remote connects via Bluetooth, which means that you do not need to point it at the TV to control it. There are a minimum of buttons on the remote itself, and this is already an ambiguous decision – someone likes such a minimalistic approach, and some users would like to have something like a multi-system remote control with many buttons.

Users in the reviews leave mostly extremely positive and even enthusiastic comments on this model. Many buyers note that the TV has exceeded expectations. Criticisms are rare and unsystematic.

Advantages

  • high-quality image with good color reproduction;

  • resolution 4K 3840×2160;

  • high contrast;

  • Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and Ethernet (RJ-45);

  • smart TV;

  • voice control via Google Assistant;

  • personalized selection of content using PatchWall technology.

Flaws

  • individual non-systematic comments / wishes of users.

Samsung UE55TU7570U 55″ (2020), titanium gray

Rating: 4.7

SAMSUNG UE55TU7570U 55

Consider now a mid-range TV manufactured by Samsung. Knowing how much innovation the Korean tech giant has brought to the monitor and TV niche, it’s only natural to expect impressive performance even from such a not-too-expensive model. Indeed, some properties of the TV are noticeably different for the better from all of the above. The model costs about 45 thousand rubles in 2021.

The VA matrix is used here, and this is good, since there is no such problem with backlighting, which even expensive IPS matrices “get sick”. At the same time, the characteristics are in no way worse, and even better, at least in terms of the same contrast ratio. Viewing angles in modern VAs are no longer inferior to IPS technology. The refresh rate here is the most standard – 50-60 Hz, but the implemented proprietary Samsung Motion Rate technology allows you to smooth and improve the visual perception of a moving picture. And finally perfecting the dynamic image is a common enhancement technology that works here with a very high index of dynamic scenes – 2000 units.

A fair criticism of experts and users to this model concerns the backlight. Here it is one of the simplest and budget options for Edge Led, where the LEDs are located around the perimeter. This technology gives mediocre uniformity and the same mediocre black balance. Partly “consoling” is the presence of HDR10 + support and advanced dimming UHD Dimming;

As for the “smart” functionality, there are practically no questions for this TV with an eye to its cost. The SmartTV system is quite expectedly implemented on the “native” Tizen operating system. Works accurately, quickly and without failures. Users leave the highest opinion in the reviews about the SmartTV system, in addition to the high image quality.

From the review of a Yandex.Market user with the status “Gadget Inspector Level 2”: “Colors are natural, responds quickly. The remote control switches from any position. Stereo sound. Smart TV. Everything is super. I recommend”.

Advantages

  • high-quality VA matrix with the widest possible viewing angles;

  • high index of dynamic scenes;

  • resolution 4K 3840×2160;

  • HDR10+ support;

  • dimming UHD Dimming;

  • high-quality implemented functionality of SmartTV;

  • convenient management.

Flaws

  • The Edge Led does not provide full black balance.

LG 55UP77506LA 55″ (2021), black

Rating: 4.8

LG 55UP77506LA 55

Rounding out the selection of the best mid-range 55-inch TVs is a new 2021 from LG. The company honestly tried to implement all possible new technological advances, as far as possible, while maintaining an affordable cost. In 2021, a TV costs about 50 thousand rubles. In some reviews, the model is positioned as a budget, entry-level, but such classifications, of course, are conditional. In our review, by definition, we do not consider options at a price close to a million rubles, so we consider models of about 50-60 thousand rubles to be mid-price.

Let’s start with the matrix, as this is one of the most important details here. Over the past few years, the Chinese company BOE has made a real breakthrough in improving IPS technology by creating a new type of matrix – ADS. Without going into technical details, this technology retains all the advantages of IPS in terms of wide viewing angles, and has noticeable advantages in terms of brightness and response speed. Resolution, as expected, 4K 3840×2160. Support for HDR10 and HDR10 Pro adds to the impression, although the “picture” becomes darkish.

The second noteworthy point is the electronics, which has undergone some important changes in this version of the TV. First of all, this is an improved α5 processor (“Alpha-5”) of the 4th generation. This is by no means a flagship, since Alpha-7 already exists, but compared to previous generations of TVs in this line, this is definitely a step forward.

The processor and related electronics provide a fairly fast and stable operation of the SmartTV system. “Smart” TV is based on the webOS system. Management is intuitive and convenient. Connectivity is plentiful, including wireless Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.

And one more good news, this time for gamers. This TV has a special game mode. When switching to it, functions are automatically “pulled up” that optimize the interaction between the TV and the computer’s video card. And most importantly – a vanishingly small Input Lag. And here you need to be careful – you need to connect the computer to the TV only through the HDMI port marked PC, otherwise the input delay will be the most common, that is, not optimized for gaming.

Advantages

  • advanced ADS matrix;

  • resolution 4K 3840×2160;

  • increased brightness and response speed;

  • high-quality color reproduction;

  • support HDR10, HDR 10 Pro;

  • low input lag in game mode;

  • Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and Ethernet (RJ-45);

  • convenient and clear control.

Flaws

  • “dark” in HDR mode.

The best 55″ 4K premium TVs with FALD backlight/dimming

Let’s move on to the even more interesting part of the review of the best 55-inch TVs according to Expertology magazine. Here we will consider options that, for a number of reasons, can be attributed to the premium class. Let’s make a reservation right away that in this selection we determined TVs that are far from the most expensive. On the contrary, one of the criteria was “maximum performance at an affordable price.” That is why we have identified super-expensive OLED TVs in a separate category. In the same selection there will be TVs no more than 100 thousand rubles.

And as for backlighting / dimming FALD, why such an emphasis is placed on this technology in the review. Ordinary, not particularly sophisticated users are accustomed to not attaching much importance to the technology of backlighting monitors and TVs. But starting from a certain technological level, the visual difference becomes more and more noticeable to the naked eye, even to a non-specialist. This is especially evident in 4K TVs with a large diagonal.

FALD technology stands for Full Array Local Dimming, that is, it implies direct illumination (Direct LED) with a full array of LEDs and local dimming, which allows to achieve the most uniform uniform color. This is the best and most affordable backlight/dimming technology for 4K LCD TVs today. There is exactly one drawback – such backlights, by definition, are not cheap.

Sony KD-55XH9077 54.6″ (2020), silver

Rating: 4.7

Sony KD-55XH9077 54.6

Let’s start the selection with a Sony TV with a slightly smaller diagonal than the nominal value we set. But the difference is quite insignificant – 54.6 inches. At different sites, you can still find the name of the model with the prefix BRAVIA – if the specification KD-55XH9077 matches, then we are talking about the same model. It costs less than 80 thousand rubles in 2021, and the price varies greatly in different regions and retail outlets.

In this description, we will consider almost only the “visual”, that is, everything related to the characteristics of the image. All other characteristics of the TV are comparable to the vast majority of other mainstream and premium options: Smart TV, a full range of interfaces, remote control, wireless communication, and more.

This model has a fairly high-quality VA matrix with a resolution of 4K 3840×2160. And here are noteworthy characteristics that are not obvious at first glance. First of all, this is the feature that the entire selection of the review is devoted to – the most progressive full-matrix FALD backlight with effective local dimming to date.

Hereinafter, it should be understood that FALD technology cannot be compared and evaluated in relation to OLED matrices, since the latter do not have any backlight at all, and organic light-emitting diodes / pixels themselves emit a glow, and this is the main revolutionary advantage of OLED.

Other advantages of the matrix are in itself high-quality color reproduction and high initial characteristics of brightness and contrast. Especially contrast, the value of which is not available to most IPS matrices. Finally, a number of effective software add-ons complement the high performance of the visual component. This is support for HDR10 and Dolby Vision extended dynamic range, X-tended Dynamic Range software brightness and contrast enhancement technology, Live Color software color rendering enhancement.

And one more important point on the visual part. In the descriptions of this TV on the trading floors, you can find different data about the screen refresh rate. Some sources indicate 60 Hz, others 120 Hz. In fact, both are true, the difference is only in resolution. In 4K 3840×2160, the frequency can be no more than 60Hz, and in FullHD 1920×1080 – up to 120Hz. This is good news for gamers, and for most of them, since playing at 4K 3840×2160 requires a super-expensive graphics card that very, very few can afford.

And in conclusion, we mention another interesting and often quite working software add-on for this TV. We are talking about Upscaling technology up to 4K. This implies the ability of the TV to transform video content on the fly with a resolution below 4K into, in fact, 4K 3840×2160. What is important, this is not about banal stretching – any TV can do this, but about transformation using intelligent algorithms.

Advantages

  • resolution 4K 3840×2160;

  • high-quality matrix with good color reproduction;

  • a number of effective image enhancement add-ons;

  • frequency 120 Hz for FullHD resolution 1920 × 1080;

  • Upscaling function – increasing content resolution up to 4K;

  • SmartTV;

  • wireless Wi-Fi, Bluetooth;

  • high-speed HDMI 2.1;

  • TV recording;

  • support for Miracast and Chromecast.

Flaws

  • systematic claims of users to the remote control.

NanoCell LG 55NANO906PB 55″ (2021), black

Rating: 4.8

NANOCELL LG 55NANO906PB 55

We continue the review of the novelty of 2021 from LG Corporation. In their assessments, many experts place this model at the top of the middle class of the entire NanoCell line, and according to a number of criteria, the TV is considered premium, and with good reason. In Russian retail, this model costs differently, the average price is about 80 thousand rubles, but the price tag often comes across more than 90 thousand rubles.

Let’s start with the most noticeable improvement, which is put in the first place in terms of importance by marketplaces – NanoCell technology. This is by far the latest innovation from LG – a special deposition on the matrix of microscopic crystals about 1nm in size gives a serious improvement in the expressiveness of the “picture”.

The net specifications of the matrix are as follows. Resolution 4K 3840×2160, IPS technology, the maximum possible viewing angles – 178 degrees. The full-array FALD backlight with 32 dimming zones ensures color uniformity across the screen. Note that the uniformity is not 100% perfect, like the top flagships, but acceptable. The margin of brightness is initially higher than that of ordinary IPS matrices, and at the peak its value reaches 380 nits, which is more than good for this class. Extended dynamic range supported by Dolby Vision and HDR 10 Pro.

It should be noted that the factory color calibration of this model is far from perfect, this issue is frankly poorly worked out. Therefore, to get the maximum result, post-calibration is needed. And in this case, the effect will be really impressive.

An important and pleasant improvement for gamers in this TV concerns synchronization with the video card. So, the model supports FreeSync and HDMI Forum VRR, thereby significantly reducing gaps in dynamic game scenes. At resolutions lower than 4K, an increased screen refresh rate is possible up to a very comfortable 120Hz. At high resolutions, the “soap opera effect” (in a good way) can be achieved by interpolation.

In terms of functionality, this model has all the advantages of a modern high-end TV: a well-implemented SmartTV system, a full set of interfaces, including wireless Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 5.0. Separately, we emphasize that there are as many as four HDMI ports, two of which are super-fast 2.1 versions, most adapted to the PS5 and Xbox Series X game consoles.

From the review of a Yandex.Market user with the Level 2 Gadget Inspector status: “Really pumped, both for cinema and for new generation game consoles, a7 Gen4 pulls without brakes, updated remote control compared to 2020, decent appearance, high-quality, good sound”.

Advantages

  • high-quality IPS matrix;

  • deposition of microcrystals using NanoCell technology;

  • increased screen refresh rate;

  • high brightness – at peak up to 380 nits;

  • extended dynamic range Dolby Vision and HDR 10 Pro;

  • synchronization with the video card of the computer;

  • two of the four HDMI ports are version 2.1, most adapted to game consoles;

  • Smart TV;

  • wireless interfaces Wi-Fi and high-speed Bluetooth version 5.0.

Flaws

  • factory calibration is not sufficiently developed, it is desirable to bring it manually.

Sony KD-55XH9096 54.6″ (2020), black

Rating: 4.9

SONY KD-55XH9096 54.6

The third and final model in the selection of the best 55-inch FALD backlit TVs is another Sony development, which is a continuation of the popular Sony KD-55XH9077, which we reviewed above. TVs are generally similar, but in this case there are a number of important improvements, due to which the cost of the device is much higher – 95-100 thousand rubles as of the end of summer 2021.

Let’s start the description with the same matrix, but not with its basic characteristics, but with those differences that give the TV a serious competitive advantage. With resolution, everything is clear – this is 4K 3840×2160, which in this class is already more of a standard than an achievement. The matrix is VA, one of the most expensive ones, which immediately manifests itself in the image characteristics. Viewing angles are comparable to IPS – 178 degrees, increased brightness and contrast, expressive shades, deep blacks.

In addition to the basic characteristics, other properties of the matrix are also impressive. First of all, this is a refresh rate of 120 Hz, which will definitely please gamers. HDR Dolby Vision supported. Particularly sophisticated users note an inevitable side effect of FALD backlighting – in HDR mode with maximum brightness (it is necessary for a normal effect), light halos are observed around individual pixels on a black background. In the daytime, the effect is invisible.

But what is especially remarkable is the factory calibration. It is not only high quality and well designed, but also made according to the Netflix Calibrate Mode standard. This means that viewers will see the content of the Netflix streaming platform in exactly the shades in which the films and series were intended by the studio itself.

The SmartTV system of this model is based on Android and works really fast. The credit for this is, first of all, rather powerful electronics, but also the software part too – the manufacturer took the optimization of algorithms with the utmost responsibility and carefully worked out the software for errors.

Advantages

  • high-quality VA matrix;

  • resolution 4K 3840×2160;

  • expressive image, deep black color;

  • Smart TV with high speed;

  • recording programs to an external USB drive;

  • backlight calibration “Netflix Calibrate Mode”.

Flaws

  • a noticeable part of users is dissatisfied with the bulky “outdated” remote control.

Best 4K OLED 55ʺ TVs

We move on to the next selection of the review, while increasing the intrigue. After all, now we will consider televisions in which the highest achievement of mankind today in terms of “visual electronics” is realized. We are talking about models with matrices on organic light-emitting diodes – the famous abbreviation OLED. These screens do not need a backlight, as the light source is the pixels themselves. Technology has been around for years, but OLED displays are still the most expensive. The very fact of having an OLED screen on a TV automatically classifies this or that model as a premium class.

OLED LG OLED55CXRLA 55″ (2020), black

Rating: 4.8

OLED LG OLED55CXRLA 55

The first in the selection will be a model produced by LG, which is often qualified by reviewers as a “basic level”, implying, of course, that it is basic within the niche of expensive OLED solutions. Indeed, at a price of about 100 thousand rubles in Russian retail and online stores, this is one of the most affordable models.

The strongest side of this TV is obvious – it’s an OLED matrix with all its advantages – breathtakingly bright and rich colors, while clean and expressive, exorbitant contrast, unprecedentedly deep natural blacks. All this will apply in full to the other two TVs in this collection, so we will not repeat ourselves.

It is worth emphasizing that the highest class here is demonstrated not only by the matrix. The TV has many add-ons, many of which are quite resource-intensive. The alpha 9 gen III processor does a good job of providing them. The interface is fast and clear. A universal multi-brand remote control is provided for remote control. Its dimensions and the general “old-fashionedness” of some users are not to their liking.

The reaction of users on the Web to this model is almost unambiguous – complete delight. Basically, this “wow effect” occurs for those who switched to an OLED TV from a conventional LCD, regardless of technology – the difference is really crushing. Everyone, without exception, is impressed by the expressive “picture”, impeccably deep natural black color, brightness, which is not afraid of even direct sunlight. A lot of good reviews about the speed of the interface and applications.

The disadvantages, judging by the reviews, are small and subjective. For example, the TV does not remember the “entry point”. For example, if the user mainly watches YouTube, then each time after turning it on, you need to manually enter this section. Some users call the remote control bulky and outdated. And another part of the users notices that the sound is “flat”, but many users do not agree with this opinion.

Let’s note another important point. After the purchase, it is necessary to update the system and software to the 2021 version. This TV can do automatically when connected to the Internet, but you need to check it. The first versions had serious shortcomings that had a noticeably negative effect on the operation of the system.

From the review of a Yandex.Market user with the Level 2 Gadget Inspector status: “Great image, contrast and black out of competition, minimal input lag for games, great for ps5, games look great, movies are a pleasure to watch.”

Advantages

  • one of the most inexpensive OLED TVs;

  • typical OLED image quality and flawless blacks;

  • record pixel response speed;

OLED Philips 55OLED805 55″ (2020), silver

Rating: 4.8

OLED Philips 55OLED805 55

Philips is a storied brand that has undergone dramatic transformations over the decades but has held its own in the marketplace and excelled even in the extremely high-tech industry of OLED smart TVs. The presented model, in addition to everything else, is also half as expensive as the previous one due to some additions of varying degrees of importance. At the end of the summer of 2021, it costs about 140 thousand rubles in the Russian Federation.

Everything is more or less clear with the matrix here – all the advantages of OLED are obvious, the picture remains bright in any daylight. Even unusually bright, but at this moment, of course, none of the users complains. Color reproduction is also beyond praise, the matrix covers up to 99% of the DCI-P3 color space. Recall that DCI-P3 is a color space standard that is established to evaluate the quality of color reproduction in digital cinemas.

As for the basic characteristics, they are more than “on the level”: 4K resolution 3840×2160; screen refresh rate 100Hz; support for extended dynamic range in three implementation options – HDR10, HDR10 +, Dolby Vision; high index of dynamic scenes – 5700 units.

An important innovation in this model is the introduction of artificial intelligence algorithms to automatically adjust to the content. The TV recognizes the type of content on the fly and transforms it for the most expressive visual experience. The technology greatly simplifies the adjustment of the main image parameters, solving many controversial issues as efficiently as possible without user intervention.

A few warm words deserve a speaker system integrated into the TV case. Here the developers decided to use three speakers, one of which plays the role of a subwoofer. Of course, no one expects studio sound from speakers in a thin body of an OLED TV, but in this case we can talk about sound that is much above average in quality.

Although this is a secondary, purely decorative and interior function, one cannot but mention it. It’s about the background lighting Ambilight. This is a popular and very colorful addition to modern premium TVs and beyond. Its essence is in the projection of a color defocused “kaleidoscope” on the wall from the back of the TV. In this projection, blurry images of the content broadcast on the screen are guessed. Looks amazing in the dark.

Advantages

  • all the advantages of OLED in the visual part;

  • coverage up to 99% of the DCI-P3 color space;

  • intelligent algorithms for automatic adjustment to the type of content;

  • the highest index of dynamic scenes – 5700 units;

  • support for HDR10, HDR10+ and Dolby Vision;

  • adaptive background lighting Ambilight;

  • high screen refresh rate;

  • high-quality work SmartTV;

  • good acoustics with subwoofer.

Flaws

  • remote control buttons close almost without gaps – it is inconvenient to use by touch.

OLED Sony XR-55A90J 55″ (2021), titanium

Rating: 4.9

OLED Sony XR-55A90J 55

The flagship in the range of OLED TVs manufactured by Sony will complete the selection. The model is completely new – it was released in the current 2021, and immediately attracted the attention of specialists and sophisticated lovers of premium electronics. This TV is even more expensive than the previous one, the minimum stock price is about 230 thousand rubles, but a more realistic cost in most stores is about 300 thousand rubles.

There are practically no questions regarding the matrix to the TV, everything here is quite expected at a height, like any OLED TV, not to mention premium. The refresh rate is 120Hz, which is even better than the two models described above. Supports high dynamic range HDR10 and Dolby Vision. There is no support for HDR10+, but this is frustrating for a very small number of users. In the end, HDR10 + content exists so far frankly little.

But still, this model has an important improvement in terms of brightness, which compares favorably with previous generations. In normal SDR mode, the peak brightness is 450 nits, which is already well above any IPS panel. And in HDR mode, peak brightness levels reach record levels of over 800 nits.

In addition to the “visuals”, this model has an impressive acoustic component. In various reviews, you can see an indication that this model has 4 built-in speakers and a subwoofer. This is only partly true, because the sound source is not the full speakers, but … the entire surface of the screen. Yes, as incredible as it sounds, this is exactly how the exclusive Acoustic Surface Audio+ technology developed by Sony engineers works. Speakers-emitters work as activators, and the entire surface of the screen, vibrating, emits high and medium frequencies, thus working as a center channel. Low frequencies are taken over by a compact subwoofer at the back of the TV.

Being a flagship, this model boasts the highest level and “full stuffing” on all fronts, including interfaces. The range of ports here is as complete and sufficient as most well-designed TVs, but with premium “bonuses” that are extremely useful in a practical sense. This is a dual-band Wi-Fi module that significantly expands the potential of wireless communication, high-speed HDMI 2.1 (four sockets) with advanced functionality, high-speed Bluetooth 5th generation and much more.

Advantages

  • 2021 premium flagship;

  • impeccable image quality, color reproduction;

  • infinite contrast, deep natural blacks;

  • high margin of brightness, in HDR mode more than 800 nits;

  • the most advanced implementation of acoustics Acoustic Surface Audio +;

  • extended set of interfaces of the latest versions;

  • dual-band Wi-Fi and high-speed Bluetooth 5th generation;

  • screen refresh rate 120 Hz.

Flaws

  • no obvious flaws and systematic complaints were found.

Best 55-inch 8K UHD TV

We are coming to the end of our review of the best 55-inch TVs according to Expertology magazine, and traditionally the final selection will be the most interesting, despite the fact that it will feature only one model. We included this TV in the review for the presentation of a future format rather than a present one. The fact is that 8K TVs are far ahead of their time and there is still very little content with this resolution. In the same way, there are few TVs on the market.

NanoCell LG 55NANO956NA 55″ (2020), black

Rating: 4.9

NanoCell LG 55NANO956NA 55

The presented model is a relatively inexpensive LG TV, released in the past 2020. We emphasize that it is inexpensive in the context of only this narrow 8K segment, and costs about 90 thousand rubles at Russian points of sale. The model was first released in 2020. There are more expensive models on sale, but for the most part they justify their cost with great difficulty, and some even have serious flaws. LG 55NANO956NA is the best for today in terms of price and quality.

Even regardless of the outstanding resolution of the matrix, the TV pleasantly surprises with some aspects of the functionality. But first, after all, about the main thing, that is, about the matrix. A high-quality IPS panel is installed here (recall, 8K resolution is 7680 × 4320 pixels) with Slim Direct multi-zone backlighting. Illumination is full-matrix type FALD. Color reproduction completely covers the sRGB space and even goes beyond it. Dolby Vision and HDR 10 Pro are supported. The screen refresh rate is the most minimal – 50/60 frames per second, and this is not a disadvantage given the cost of the TV.

A few words about the characteristic, which is rarely analyzed in brief reviews – sound. In this model, he is surprisingly good. A set of four 10W speakers delivers a balanced sound with clear highs and mids, well-defined bass and more than enough headroom.

Functionality – here the developers honestly tried to fill even such a relatively inexpensive model with progressive innovations. The SmartTV system is implemented on the webOS platform and is well developed. Naturally, in addition to SmartTV comes an expanded set of interfaces, including Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. From the latter, the multifunctional universal remote control Magic Remote works, which can be controlled by other equipment, but through the IR sensor. The TV supports smart home ecosystems – Google Home, Yandex Smart Home, Apple HomeKit, LG Smart ThinQ.

Users in the reviews are practically unanimous in appreciating the three main things in this model – image, sound and functionality. Separately, the quality of materials and the super-thin form factor are also highly appreciated. Critical remarks are extremely rare and come mainly from gamers – a slight disappointment due to the low screen refresh rate.

From the review of a Yandex.Market user with the status “Gadget Inspector Level 2”: “NanoCell is still a cool matrix, you can’t take your eyes off it. From all sides it is gorgeous, the color reproduction is very realistic, believe me, I have been doing photography professionally for 3 years and I know what I’m talking about.

Advantages

  • NanoCell technology;

  • multi-zone direct full-matrix FALD backlight Slim Direct;

  • remote control from a wearable gadget through a proprietary application;

  • good sound with a sufficient margin of volume, bass and stereo effect;

  • there is a game mode with minimal input lag and fast response;

  • voice control and speech input;

  • steel case back, premium appearance;

  • universal remote control Magic Remote, can control other equipment.

Flaws

  • no significant deficiencies were identified.
